Because only pandering to hard left that is already voting for you is how HRC lost in 2016. Go look up interviews with Latinos and Blacks who voted for Trump and you will see the same answers again and again...Trump was talking about jobs, health care and security which matters to them while HRC was simply criticizing Trump and pushing for immigration with no push on U.S. issues affecting the voters. Does not matter Trump was mostly lying, he was the only one talking about things that got the voters interested. So if Dems think they need to repeatedly pander to the party faithful already locked in to vote for them and ignore trying to win States they are in trouble. Who care is more Californians and New Yorkers and New Jerseyians come out to vote in large numbers....Dems already have those state EC votes locked up and winning by a larger margin does not fix the other parts of the country they lost. I keep hearing about more minorities voting etc. but I guarnatee you the way the candidates are simply pandering to their own locked in base, it will just mean winning the states they already will win anyway with more votes rather than winning in the States HRC blew big time.
My point is immigration is hardly a party platform issue this time around, but it's an issue that constituents still care to know positions on. And comprehensive immigration reform is hardly for extreme lefties, hell, it was Reagan's platform.
But here is the thing, if you are trying to win an election you lost because you failed to address the issues properly (again see interviews with Latinos who voted Trump on immigration policies), then the idea is to LISTEN and come up with broader ideas that cater to Americans, not the far left already voting for you. If Dems prommised protection for DACA, changes to asylum laws, more border security to reduce crossings, improved process for those applying the right way, they would have won more states. So far all we hear from Dems is protection for people who cross over the border illegally, something the average American does not support based on 2016. People support a better process for immigration so if Dems just want to keep undocumented crossings up and increasing with no effort to stem it, again they will only get support from those already bought in. We all know that Clinton and Obama and many Dem senators came out publicly in favor of stopping illegal crossings and implementing plans to reduce the crossings and deport those who are not here legally. We all have read the quotes. But trump catered to his extreme base that those Dems suddenly got chicken and went the other way. Rather than caring about the issue they played politics to distance themselves.
The dems are working on a version of that approach but it is in the form of "broader free stuff" rather than "broader ideas." Reparations buys the black vote and cancellation of the student debt. will get them some more white folks that might otherwise be drifting in the middle. They are basically running a traditional "free stuff" campaign, where free pass to be in this country is also a freebie. Nothing like the smell of free stuff in the morning. Bernie Sanders unveiling plan to cancel all $1.6 trillion in student debt
Somewhere earlier today, I read in an article that Bernie and Fauxcohontas are two socialists getting into a bidding war with other people's money- particularly in regard to their trying to outdo each other with the student loan giveaway. Funny- but true.
So..... This whole concept of cancelling student debt is confusing for me. Statistically, people with college degrees earn more money over their lifetimes than those without. Seems to me if Comrade Bernie and Comrade Betsy are looking for ways to spend other people's money, they ought to be giving money to people without college degrees. Income inequality, ya know. I'm jus sayyin.
Comrade Sanders will not be outdone when it comes to giving shit away at someone else's expense. My position student debt remains the same. Until someone asks why does college cost so fucking much to begin with, and what part of this loan forgiveness are college institutions willing to participate in, all other discussions are non starters.
