. May 16, 2008 SouthAmerica: Reply to Pilotboy What do you mean when you said: âReal Estate is no longer cheap to attract foreign investmentâ? A member of my family sold their ethanol refinery about 4 years ago and since then they have been investing instead in real estate development in Brazil. Brazil has just started real estate development the kind where people can buy a house or apartment and pay it in 30 years. If you took the time to read my 4-part article why China should invest $ 200 billion dollars in Brazil â and also my article why Brazil should adopt the new Asian currency â then you would understand the potential of the Brazilian economy in the coming years. I ask you what have been the main engines of growth in the US economy in the last 7 years? The Bush administration has pissed away during that period about $ 2 trillion US dollars in defense spending. The other major source of economic growth is the warehousing millions of people in the prison system â basically incarcerating desperate and poor people to create new jobs in the prison system in communities around the country. At last count the United States had 2.3 million people in prison and another 5 million on probation. The other major source of economic growth it has been building houses and condos by the millions all over the United States. These 3 areas take care of a big chunk of economic activity in the US economy. Whatâs so special about it? The Bush administration in 8 years these clowns managed to double the cumulative outstanding debt of the US government from $ 5 trillion to $ 10 trillion US dollars. If I had to choose 2 companies to symbolize the future of Brazil and the United States there are 2 companies that comes immediately to mind: Brazil = Google United States = Enron. . ***** You probably missed reading some of the information that I had posted on this thread as follows: Bloomberg News - Thursday, May 8, 2008 Petrobras plans to hire 14,000 in US$112.7 billion expansion By Joe Carroll, Bloomberg Bloomberg News ***** âBrazil launches Internet-based educational programs for public schoolsâ People's Daily - China April 09, 2008 The Brazilian government launched on Tuesday a nationwide Internet-based educational program, from which up to 37 million students and teachers would benefit. The program, titled Broad Band in Schools, is designed to establish broadband Internet connections at 55,000 public schools, said Ronaldo Sardenberg, president of the National Telecommunications Agency. Telephone operators have ensured that all the schools would have free access to Internet-based services, Sardenberg said. He added that the network transmission rate will be one megabit per second (Mbps) in the first phase of implementation, and two Mbps in January 2011. The program, one of many initiatives of the National Program of Computing in Education, is considered one of the most important government projects by the government up to 2010. .
4 or more years ago the R.E. you could buy in Brasil was extremely cheap comparable to equal costing properties worldwide. It was basically the deal of a lifetime. Since then and especially the last two years prices have been soaring as well as the Real strengthening. Thus now from a worldwide perspective it is not cheap anymore. Since they have recently started the 30 year mortgage, that should keep prices going for the near term. But how many more people will really be able to afford a home this way as most are either dirt poor or already have a home? My main point is just that it is no longer cheap from a foreigner's perspective so that FDI will slow considerably. I don't know why you are discussing USA. I never said one good thing about it. Frankly I think you are being easy on what the govt. there has done. If it was up to me, Bush, Cheney and a couple hundred congressmen should be executed for treason. I think Brasil has huge potential. But they need to make some serious changes to get there. They still have one of the most inefficient economies in the world and this is one of the only good things I can say about the USA, they still have the most efficient economy out there. So like I said, most of the recent progress was due to the commodity boom. That will not last forever. So can you name any laws that changed or anything Lula has done to get some credit for any of the progress. Anything???
Its completely due to commodities. They have been diversifying, but none of this could have happened without the commodities boom. If China slows down for any reason, commods go south, and so does Brazil. Period. Eventually, they may be able to wean themselves off this, but not anytime soon.

. May 19, 2008 SouthAmerica: Question for Libertad Hi Libertad, I have a question for you, before I finish my next article for publication. Please tell me why the Brazilian government should not renationalize the Petrobras Corporation? Please give me a good reason or more to justify keeping a piece of Petrobras on public hands. I asked the same question to a friend of mine in Brazil to see what he says from his perspective. Thanks. .
. May 20, 2008 SouthAmerica: Here is a major project that should be blocked. ***** Suez Energy wins bid for hydroelectric power plant in Brazil Chinaview - CN May 20, 2008 RIO DE JANEIRO, May 19 (Xinhua) -- A consortium led by French-Belgian multinational Suez Energy won the public bidding Monday to build a hydroelectric power plant in the Amazon rainforest region. The Suez group, Consorcio Energia Sustentavel, offered to produce energy at 71.4 reals (43.53 U.S. dollars) per megawatt hour, 21.6 percent below the auction's established price cap. Jirau Energia, the rival consortium, offered 78.9 reals (48.1 dollars) per megawatt hour. Suez Energy holds a 50.1-percent stake in the winning bidder, which is also comprised of Brazilian companies Camargo Correa Investimentos, Eletrosul Centrais Eletricas and Companhia Hidreletrica do Sao Francisco. Victor-Frank Paranhos, president of the consortium, said technical studies allowed a reduction of 1 billion reals (602 million dollars) in the total cost of the project, initially estimated at 8.7 billion reals (5.2 billion dollars). The Jirau power plant, which will be built on the Madeira river, should have a capacity of 3,300 megawatts of power when completed in 2013. .
