    Sector Snap: Solar Stocks Rise

Solar Stocks Up As Companies Report Agreements and New Products

NEW YORK (AP) -- Solar stocks rose Monday after several companies reported contracts, products and supply agreements, helping allay concerns that a tight market for polysilicon will hurt results.
Yingli Green Energy Holding Co. was among the biggest gainers, with a rise of $2.45, or 10.5 percent, in morning trading. The company reported a supply agreement with Germany's Wacker Chemie AG earlier in the day.

Evergreen Solar Inc. and Solarfun Power Holdings Co. also posted strong gains. Evergreen rose 59 cents, or 6.9 percent, to $9.18 and Solarfun rose 73 cents, or 6.6 percent, to $11.86.

Many companies' shares rose as companies began presentations at the first day of a major solar power conference in Long Beach, Calif. The Solar Power 2007 conference sold out session tickets on Thursday afternoon.

Power-One Inc. introduced a new photovoltaic inverter on Monday for large commercial solar systems, which will connect them to a grid. Additionally, Canadian Solar Inc. said it would build a solar park in Suzhou, China, to be used for testing and demonstrating solar products.

Power-One shares rose 25 cents, or 5.6 percent, to $4.92 as Canadian rose 37 cents, or 4.9 percent, to $7.95.

Signal Hill Group LLC said SunPower Corp. will be able to address costs effectively and that its acquisition of PowerLight in November helped strengthen its position in the California market.

"SunPower is one of the key names that should be part of a Clean Energy portfolio," wrote analyst Michael Carboy in a note Monday. "Tremendous franchise strength, vertical integration, crisp execution and ... market growth opportunities in coming years appeal strongly to us."

SunPower shares rose $2.14, or 2.6 percent, to $86.01.

However, CIBC World Markets Corp. analyst Adam Hinckley downgraded LDK Solar Co. to "Sector Performer" from "Market Weight," citing concerns about polysilicon prices.

"The ability of companies to ramp production with minimal polysilicon experience is concerning," Hinckley wrote in a note Monday. "We believe the mass build of industry poly capacity may cause greater pricing pressure in 2009 and beyond." LDK shares rose $1.20, or 1.8 percent, to $69.91.

American Technology Research suggested that investors buy solar stocks after companies report earnings and sell before the following quarter's report.

"Due to the positive near-term demand picture in solar, earnings season has been an exercise in gauging sentiment and whisper numbers rather than fundamentals," wrote analyst John Hardy.
