There is a misinterpretation that the trades put on when there's a pairs alert mean short one and buy the other, but in reality the theory only buys the other (which is the undervalued when the market's undervalued) or shorts one (which is the overvalued when the market's overvalued). Using market directional prediction then I can see where looking for directions in stocks is still essentially predicting the entire market's movement, and so I've gone too far with the short retorts I see about defining these trading styles.
