As religion has driven people like Hitler to acquit themselves no better than others, but rather excuse and grant license to act in ways that would make any despot take pause, it might well at least be reasonable to speculate that once people generally can accept life is nothing more than short and finite and so to be cherished, they may treat all existence more respectfully.
Non were raised atheists. On the contrary, all had strong religious backgrounds. They did not commit atrocities in the name of atheism as is often perpetrated in the name of religion. Without religion they have less authority, not more, to contrive their evil.
