how traders maintain edge?

Discussion in 'Trading' started by traderzhangSan, Jun 21, 2010.

  1. Attached is an old Universe dated 6-21-10.....

It works with the one pager entitled "Unusual Volume...."

This Excel sheet is arranged alphbetically so those who fill in the rows as stocks are added can insert the new row according to its place in the Alphabet.

Users sort the Excel by DATE and by Rank.

the result is a list which shows the dates for entry for each stock on the list. Since all the same dates are in one part of the chronologically arranged list, for each date the symbols are listed from best to worst according to rank which is a calculation of th % per day the stock advanced during its hold period which begins on the "DATE".

People also keep Excel lists of "recently owned" stocks so that they can retrade them each cycle of the natural cycle.

Several columns show these cycoles and their character.

A person who is a fair trader wouldtrade many cycles a year. as a person gets into tradig, he strives for 100 cycles a year. This is two cycles per week approximately.

So far this week I have recieved three versions of the Universe, all from different contributors.

If you do not have an older version of Excel you cannot read this file. To see Excel files on ET, you need to have an older version of Excel since ET does not have the ability to handle the contemporary Excel product.

The list you may be able to see only contains the next trades for 198 stocks. It was constructed by reviewing about 15,000 stocks using a TA approach.

  2. Most people fill in a hot list for their trading. Some do it as a "batting order" for each week.

You have explained your reasons for all the things you fear to do. That is something any person can do and keep in mind.

You base your views of other people on your personal orientation. This is common as well.

Calling the OP, OP is common too. referring to his opening post as an OP is common too.

For you is may be impossible to see the list or look at the columns and their associated math formulae. That is a result of your lifestyle , etc....

You get to be an example of a person who gets what he deserves and has the health he deserves.

Personally I have a lot of fun and I make other people milionaires as a consequence of their personal decisions to learn and build their minds.

Today, anyone who chooses can go pick up a timely list by the click of a mouse. As a consequence they are always informed and current on opportunities.

Many years ago several people, independently named what they were receiving as: Getting Tomorrow's Paper Today". They were very perceptive and they grew wealthy.

    Have another laugh or two......

  3. Dear Jack- I think your list would be more like getting 198 papers a day!
Lets take a step back and understand what I do-- I create actual portfolios with real money. I don't have 198 stocks in a portfolio, on average it's more like 15-20. So 198 " fresh " ideas is of no use to me. I like to think what I do that makes me special is almost every pick I add to one of my portfolios does well. Of course they do not all do well, a couple remain flat for extended periods and indeed a couple go down. Such is life. When I give 13 picks to the ET universe, readers can be sure they need do no more additional research-- I have done it all. It couldn't be more easy-- I provide you with the symbols and the rational and all you have to do is swallow your pride and hit buy. Just like killing a man in warfare, once you do it once, the experience becomes easier and easier.

Life is about curating and simplifying Jack, you sound like a hoarder, a man who sits amongst reams of outdated information. May I suggest you hand draw each chart and then take the mess into the bath as I do. The hot water has a way of making the pages unreadable afterwords and thus reduces overall clutter.

A lot of what you do Jack seems a substitute for using your mind. I remember every stock move in every stock in my universe (over 2,000) for over 25 years. There are lots of over the counter remedies that can help you in this regard. You might just try eating a bowl of blueberries a day. I think I could really free you of a lot of indecision.

Why don't we do this. FIVE STOCK CHALLENGE! You pick 5 I pick 5 and we let them ride, even in a down market, lets see who holds up better. It must be very hard to chose just 5 from 198. It's so much easier to pick 5 from zero. Think about that Jack. Do Not Overstimulate yourself.

A couple lines from your warm messages to me that I honestly do not understand.

1-Attached is an old Universe.... >Do you mean attached is a list of buy recommendations? Why not say that? By cloaking the ideas in a universe you have escaped any blame if things go wrong-- after all Universe's implode in deep space don't they?

It works with the one pager entitled "Unusual Volume....> No idea what this means.

This Excel sheet is arranged alphbetically so those who fill in the rows as stocks are added can insert the new row according to its place in the Alphabet... ??? >You list your stocks alphabetically-- so does the newspaper

Users sort the Excel by DATE and by Rank.??? > Very strange. Old date please and worst ranked!!!! WHAT! Wouldn't users rather just hit " MY TOP 5 IDEAS? "

Jack I've been in this game a long long time. Dealing with professional money managers,. trust officers and hedge fund managers and of course brokers-- one thing folks have a real hard time doing is LAYING IT ON THE LINE AND ASSOCIATING THEIR SMARTS AND TALENT WITH AN IDEA.... they would rather confuse you with layers upon layers of top ranked stocks and even then if you ask enough questions about a name they profess to really not have a feeling about they are drawing from an analyst's view-- it is the analysts then who come closest to my thinking and luckily I know a few of those personally including one over at S&P...

Is it possible you work for the Excel company? I tried to open your damn link and of course could not a million questions from my damn computer I have no idea what " applications is " when an analyst sends me something important they send a PDF and I just hit open once that's the way I like it.

A person who is a fair trader would trade many cycles a year. as a person gets into trading, he strives for 100 cycles a year. This is two cycles per week approximately.....> This I can almost understand 100 trades a year, right?

So far this week I have received three versions of the Universe, all from different contributors.... >so that would be 594 ideas to sift through!

The list you may be (not) able to see only contains the next trades for 198 stocks. It was constructed by reviewing about 15,000 stocks using a TA approach.... >Which TA approach? I use my own system and not an ounce of software is used in the process. I once served jury duty with Phil Roth. Nice man. Together we were drawing charts on the back of the trial case notes and our eyes met... it was nearly love. I told him what I tell you now -a chart, a good looking TA chart is like pornography-- you know one when you see it. He laughed.

    New Post 06-23-10 01:25 AM

Most people fill in a hot list for their trading. Some do it as a "batting order" for each week....> Now batting # 157... 157....

You have explained your reasons for all the things you fear to do. That is something any person can do and keep in mind....> YES I live a fear based life, I'm afraid. (pun intended)

You base your views of other people on your personal orientation. This is common as well...> Yes I am an extremely good judge of people as you now know.

For you is may be impossible to see the list or look at the columns and their associated math formulae. That is a result of your lifestyle , etc.... >WELL HERE YOU GO AGAIN... I can't read your list because you have hid it. JUST WRITE OUT WHAT THE COMPANY DOES AND I'LL GUESS THE DAMN SYMBOLS!!!!!! I'm not here to do math! I failed math in high school and had to beg for a " D " in college.

You get to be an example of a person who gets what he deserves and has the health he deserves.... >Finally something nice out of your mouth. I agree.

Personally I have a lot of fun and I make other people milionaires as a consequence of their personal decisions to learn and build their minds....> Well funboy make some $ here then for all these ET'ers!

Many years ago several people, independently named what they were receiving as: Getting Tomorrow's Paper Today". They were very perceptive and they grew wealthy...> I believe you are talking about the beginning of the internet here, not sure. I could write tomorrows NY Times in five seconds here... McChrystal canned, Oil spill out of control, New BP head takes charge, energy policy moves forward in a smaller form, a bomb goes off at a wedding in Iraq, Somali pirates capture another ship... Last Airbender to open big and M Night Shamalama regains his Hollywood position.

Have another laugh or two...... >Well certainly you know jack that those that laugh a lot live longer it has been proven. You have fun, so you laugh... why does this sound like a negative when it comes out of your fingertips? Please fill in below and lets get this started.~ stoney

  4. It is tough as you are constantly chasing your own tail, and when an event like the 40% whack we took due to the financial crisis happens, some strategies have simply not recovered at all due to the vaccuming out of liquidity. Don't put all your eggs into one basket, diversify out of stocks trading, go into properties, football trading on prediction markets...etc

    2) PPO- Jack every time this pokes down into the $21.00's buy. It bounces. This is a play on electric cars in a roundabout way. 50 cents was given away again today.
This is a stock who at their last earnings report had a lot of euro/Dollar noise, now that the Euro has slipped so much EPS should look even better.
    Some highlights-

Sales were $145.3 million, an increase of $36.4 million, or 33%, compared with the prior-year period. Excluding the impact of the euro to dollar exchange rate, sales increased 29%.
Adjusted Net Income and Adjusted EPS were $14.1 million and $0.31 per diluted share, compared with $4.0 million and $0.09 per diluted share in the prior-year period.
"The year is off to a good start and our results reflect strength in all of our businesses. In addition to year over year economic improvement, we are benefitting from continued strong growth in Asia and early sales into Electric Drive Vehicles (EDVs)."
We'll focus on the Energy Storage business although the Separations Media also grew 25% year over year.

In the quarter, sales for the Energy Storage segment were $101.4 million, an increase of $27.7 million, or 38%, compared with the prior-year period (up 34% net of the impact of the euro to dollar exchange rate).
Sales of lead-acid battery separators were $71.0 million, an increase of $14.6 million, or 26%, compared with the prior-year period, driven by global economic improvement and strong continued growth in Asia.
Lithium battery separator sales were $30.4 million, an increase of $13.1 million, or 76%. The increase reflected economic improvement in consumer electronics as well as continued application proliferation and new product launches, including emerging EDVs.

    3) UA- Under Armour. It was a rather obvious pick up @ $36.00 this morning. Is it just a technical trade now? i think so. wait for a more sustained pull back to get seriously long. But this company I have laughed at long enough. It's time to realize they are not going away. Some factors that have swung me as of late-- this new form fit look for men that Haynes T shirts and others are using in a big way and a message board post I read from an old timer who said at the golf course all the grandfathers were wearing UA to keep their fat rolls under control. When you can take a concept to all ages-- you have a product!

    4) Ok Now we get down to some tough names. I may give you more than two to consider. (A) LLEN. You know this stock from recent gains. L&L has pulled into good support giving you a chance to get in @$9.70 (B) ZIOPHARM ZIOP - You already know this name from my pain. let my pain be your gain. Time frame pushed out- $8.00 by Christmas Day- now $3.45 (C) AKORN AKRX- $3.11. A steady low price name / Insider buying above the price-

  7. Sorry you didn't catch on; not everyone does.

Thanks for your posts; they make a good example.

Qcharts invented a real time ratio for use on their lists functions and for sorting their lists. They named the ratio "Unusual Volume".

Read "Putting the Pieces Together"; then you will see how everything I mentioned is used. Or don't read it.

  8. Good luck getting anything this specific out of Jack... too many of his past calls have blown up in his face... and he needs to speak in riddles to keep followers hanging on his every word and believing their lack of success is because they didn't grasp his full meaning.

  9. I suspected as much.

Folks I got into UA for a 3/4 position @ $35.10. The top of the channel is just too tempting, IF IT SHOULD CHOSE TO GO THERE.. If the stk comes in to $31 we will fill it out. But this stock is now firmly in the portfolio.

As the market is obviously shaky- I've gone with another name I am familiar with
Martek Bio MATK. I like this chart too.

The only other stocks on my watch for the near future now are--

    PANL

    PPO

    CLF

RNN (she hangs in there doesn't she?)

    and don't laugh- REFR! :) ~si

Will Jack Hershey and stonedinvestor post broker statements for any trades discussed as taken in this thread ?

If not...what's the point of challenge if it's not real trading that makes it look more like just "stock picking" as seen on any typical Yahoo! board.
