gee that went over my head.. why didn't i make that connection how many payments you got left dude?.. 59?
This thread started out about computer fan noise, drifted to "oil", "cars", "sense of humor"... If one builds a "trading computer", cooling is barely an issue.
Don't bother repairing. Likely your fans have worn bearings or bushings. Even if you can find spare parts, there's a lot of work to do replacing them. I don't think a new one would cost $100, not even $50.
Many people don't know the difference between ball bearing and sleeveless fan; Sleeves fan are generally quieter than ball bearing but it only works continuously for less than 1 year; then it becomes sticky and you will have difficult time at first to notice the problem until your computer crash at random time. At this point; there are no cure for the fan; even adding motor oil wouldn't help much. On the other hand; ball bearing fan is slightly nosier than sleeveless fan; but it can last very long time; if you adding motor oil into a new one; it will last even longer. Until the fan has significant amount dust build up, which will destroy the fan's bearing in long haul; therefore getting more nosier; but it still better than no fan at all. Most of video card and cheap power supply has equipped with sleeveless fan. I find that hard drive makes more noise than fans in a typical computer.
Have an Nvidia vid card with NO FAN and I replaced the noisy chipset fan with a heat sink. Runs cool, and you can hear someone fart three rooms away. Fans blow. Pun intended
