    hey dip shit.

it's not $ that is the value of American help- PRC has plenty of money. if you actually give a shit about these people suffering instead of using this as a platform for your anti-US shit, you'd realize that pretty much all the govt $ donations from abroad are for show of support and not material to the scope of this tragedy. what is material $-wise? -- the foreign currency reserves sitting in PRC coffers. they have the $. much the same way as the $5mm from PRC was nice, but a drop in the katrina bucket.

no.... the real help the US is providing, LIKE THE US PROVIDED AFTER THE TSUNAMI, is our expertise and resources to actually HELP the people, on the ground. hint: it's a lot more than 500m or 5mm.

are you soon to forget that it was US SHIPS and troops on scene first (and last) in Indonesia? the US does more to help the needy in this world than any other country IN HISTORY. it is also worth noting that the people we rushed to save in Indonesia were the same people who were literally dancing in the streets in celebration on 9.11.

not everything the US govt has done is right, some fucking insanely stupid. to focus on that and ignore the historical generosity of the American people (and govt) is to have selective amnesia (or ignorance) to further your own slant on reality.

First statement may be true, but the second is wrong.

As a Chinese living in shanghai , I can confirm that many Chinese people (including myself ) like Americans, not the contrarary. People tend to admire the culture of a more advanced economy and a world power, it is human nature. ( In the sense you can understand why people all over the world become more and more interested in learning mandarin ) Travelling in China, you can find people here are generally freindly to westerners. On the other side, it is the arrogance/rudeness of the US government that pushes people away and caused worldwide dislike. And the American people's ignorance of the facts in other parts of the world does not alleviate the situation.

  7. One thing not get, newspaper publish the McDonald's ad, why they not explain them, this not correct as red means celebration? Not saying that McDonald is right or wrong, but wish it could have been avoided. Better safe than repent.

I find the Intelinvestor's words quoted below very true.

I have been on ET for several years, I noticed when it comes to China , many poster here showed little knowledge of the current modern China, (of course neither do they have much idea of the ancient old China)

How can this happen ? US is supposed to be a country with freedom of speech and information is supposed to disseminate without bias and obstacle. But the majority of posters here view China with a colored-glass. This has given me an hint that American people may not be as free as I thought they are, and they may not be as free as they think they are. Wake up Americans , we are anxiously learning from you and try to assimilate anything good in your culture ( look at the huge humanitary improvement in Chinese governement's treatment of the Sichuan quake this time ), meanwhiles you are blinded by your own media and showing little interest in facts happening in other parts of the world, how can you compete in a more competitive global market and keep your No.1 superpower status without knowing the competitors ? Self-Lock has caused the decline of China as a leading world power since 1760, nowadays are you American people trying to lock yourselves for the first time in history and jeopardize your own interest ?

This sounds rediculous to me , a 36-year old Chinese who have been an admirer of American culture since my high school years.

  9. Let me add to my list of distortions

vii) Regarding Capablanca's comment that Chinese translation of foreigner is "foreign evil", here is the explanation:
    - when Chinese public first met the Westerners l50 yrs ago, they gave them nicknames "Red Hair, Green Eyes", "Foreign Ghost People", etc.
    - Nowadays, ppl in the south (who speaks Cantonese) still call foreigners "Foreign Ghost People". And Chinese in the north (whose mother language is Mandarin) normally call westerners "Liao Wei" where "Liao" is a way of calling someone close or senior, and "Wai" means foreign
    - In Chinese, America literally means "Beautiful Country".
    - Anyway, when Chinese say "Beautiful Country", actually it is more b'coz of the translation.... it doesn't really mean they like America. Just like when some Chinese in the south say "Foreign Ghost ppl", it is not out of disrespect
viii) When a Chinese mentions America, I would say that 80% of time is when he wants to buy something, 15% is when he mentions something he admires, 5% of time is when he feels sick of it. Chinese ppl are famous of being occupied with day-to-day life and hv little interest in other things.
ix) Middle class in China tends to buy foreign goods when they hv the money. This is different from Korean/Japanese who tend to support local brands first. But this has little with whether they like America or Japan or not, they just care about the quality of the goods rather then which country makes it.
