How long should you paper trade before trading with real money?

  1. Depends what your time frame is

No matter what *IMO* & experience, though limited, no professional will take your work seriously unless you have tested your theories over a very long period of time and market conditions. I was basically laughed at for 4 years of backtesting on ES with 1 hour candles. I am still forwardtesting needless to say as I don't exactly have all the cash to throw down on all the history I need.

So if no professional will take it seriously, there is probably a reason. Either they have seen this before (and the results that ensued) or it's most likely not valid because of length of time testing, regardless of your rate of return or the std. deviation between these gains. And trust me, my programs utilize pretty conservative risk management, so it's not like this information was thrown together recklessly.

I have seen a lot of opinions on this thread that are pretty much laughable regarding time frames *IMO*, but again I am not driving a Ferrari either so what do I know?
