they look at your ip address to figure out where you are. go search for web proxy servers on google or some search engine. then put that in your IE under tools-connections-lan settings. (also depends on type of connection you currently have) check box for proxy server and use that number that you found. problem is, a lot of this web proxies are just poorly secured college and small business servers, so once admins figure it out, they close it. also, when you find one posted on the inet, it is likely a lot of other people found it too and connection may be slow because all the spammers use it too. also, it is possibly illegal to use other servers without authorization. but anyway, i am not telling you to do it, but that how it works. and is napster the only/best alternative out there?

  3. Your could easily get the country info from HTTP header CGI variables.
i.e. the language used by the browser operating system:

    Accept-Language: en-us

    English-US.

Some other possible values: da, de, el, en, fr, it

  4. Not reliable - what if the person is using the French version of the browser on a machine in Switzerland.

The IP address of the connection can tell the server where you're hooked to the internet (unless the person takes steps to route the connection through one or more machines).
