I think the other problem people have is a 'moralistic' one, viewing the trader as not doing anything useful, unlike a doctor, life insurance provider or even car dealer where the benefits of that persons role in society are more obvious to them What we do is a mix of the life insurance provider and car dealer but the layman just doesn't get it what can you do, the world is full of morons?
Like in any probability distribution, there will be people who make money. I've worked under the tape (the real tape) and under real NYSE traders so that really helps me get an edge on a daily basis. I've also worked with MMs and in keeping order to the markets. And yes im profitable.
