How do you accelerate in a manual car?

My first car was a '68 Camaro with a 3 speed Muncie floor shifter (bought in 1978). Sometimes when you put it into gear it might not be all the way in gear and when you let out the clutch the shifter would snap out of gear so violently it would break your hand if it was on the shifter knob! I soon learned to shift into gear, take my hand off the knob, THEN let out the clutch. LOL

I learned on a Saab 900. It was a blast, my Dad taught me and was amazingly patient, which surprised me at the time. At one point we were practicing starting out on a hill in the middle of nowhere and a cop pulls up behind us, flicks on the lights, and then gets out and walks up to the window and asks what the problem is here. My Dad said he's teaching me to drive a stick. The cop then goes on a rant about doing it somewhere else as this isn't the place for it. We were in a fairly well to do suburb, with no one around, and my Dad just says ok we'll finish up here and go home. The guy followed us for about a mile, and if he had gone another block he would have seen us turn into our driveway. I suspect he radioed in the license plate and realized he was an idiot.

You will soon be replacing a clutch disk and throw out bearing and maybe
a pressure plate doing this. Good grief man!

He made need to replace clutch, throw bearing and pressure plate. I would do all three if I went in to it. Those fingers on pressure plate can get weak and even break. He may have already wiped out his clutch disk.

He could try doubling clutching it if he hasn’t smoke his clutch already but double clutching may confuse him even more.lol

If 1st gear completely went out and I was FORCED to start out in 2nd gear I could I could do it but I sure wouldn't do it otherwise.Put in 2nd gear, rev engine, pop the clutch for a micro second(not long enough to choke off/kill engine)and repeat that about 4 times and that should get the vehicle up to about 10 mph which will be fine for normal 2nd gear operation. Continue upshifting as needed.

Obviously you didn't read my post# 20 reply yet.

    Been there, didn't do that.

    + + +

Taught my younger brother everything he knows (actually just the use of a clutch on my Nissan ZX, not the rig which Fedex sent him to their training center in Arkansas to learn :):-

Note: you won't believe it but yes that really is my younger brother behind the wheel in lower Manhattan. He didn't know someone was filming him until weeks later it was pointed out to him.
