"George Soros is among those who invested in a Japanese hedge fund that collapsed last week after losing almost all its capital, The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday. Citing people familiar with the situation, the newspaper said Soros's investment in the $300 million Eifuku fund was about $180 million at the time of its meltdown. Soros gave John Koonmen, the investment manager of Eifuku, much of his starting capital several years ago, the paper said. The fund lost the capital in just seven trading days in early January and is being forced to close. The 72-year-old Hungarian born financier and philanthropist made the investment through his Tokyo staff and may not have even met Koonmen, according to the report. Soros, ranked No. 37 on the Forbes World's Richest People list, bears the moniker of "The Man Who Broke the Pound," for betting against sterling in 1992 until London pulled out of the European currency grid that prefigured the euro single currency. He heads the $7 billion Quantum Endowment Fund and numerous other investment vehicles"
