Chicago's public school system sucks but the private school system is enormously much better and extremely expensive. The top 10 private schools in Chicago typically put 3 of their private schools in the top 50 nationwide...tuition for any of these private schools > 30k per year but they do produce student scores for entry into college: SATs > 1400 and ACTs > 32. SSAT entry scores into these private high schools > 700. The top public schools in the Chicago area typically have debate teams and are ranked nationally too. Also, they're typically located in high-income areas and offer things that the typical public school just can not afford. It's a very competitive academic environment in Chicago and its surrounding suburbs. The amount of money you have and where you live will dictate the academic proficiency of your child and what university they eventually attend. It's the same anywhere else in the United States. Just as importantly, the private school system in Chicago is diverse with people of color but it's a huge economic difference to the people of color in the public school system. Simply, your academic proficiency is directly connected to your family income / residence location in comparison to genetics. wrbtrader
Yeah but it was funny lol. Hey anyone remember when Trump said the markets would crash under Biden? Gotta call a spade a spade here folks. Since Nov 2 2020: NAZ and S&P up 38% Dow up 34% That's quite a 52 week jump when you think about it. If Trump was right, we're in for one hell of a correction.
I remember that. He also said everyone's 401K would go to shit, and blah blah blah. He also stated, before his presidency, that any president that allowed the Dow to fall 1000 points should resign. On his watch, it did that twice, at least. He's a goober. A poser. A loser. Fuck him and the horse that he allowed to ride on him in on, heh.
You're looking at this as one or the other. In contrast, I'm saying genes are important but today the most important reasons that determine a child's academic success is their parents' socioeconomic status. Simply, I never implied that genetics was not important. I've stated there are other reasons more important, especially in Chicago. By the way, when a public school identifies an exceptional student at a young age...they usually encourage the parents of that student to enroll their child into a private school with better academic resources... This process is very common in the Chicago area and it dilutes the academic achievements in the public school system when they lose their brightest students to the private school system by offering free tuition and subsidized transportation to those of less socioeconomic status to be able to attend the top private schools...some even attend top prep boarding schools out of state. As an example, the top 3 students in my nephews and nieces Chicago private school are in fact top academic students (people of color) that originated from the public school system...from poor neighborhoods...students on track to attend Ivy league universities. There have been studies too. They show that if you give children from poor neighborhoods (low SES) access to the same resources as the private school system (high SES)...those children do in fact excel academically on the same level (academic grades, SATs, ACTs) and are accepted/attend the top universities in North America. wrbtrader
It’s a good question. An adult reading level is between a seventh and eighth grade reading level - and there is nothing wrong with that. Having an eight grade reading level does not mean you are using phonics to sound out words but rather you are actually able to understand and digest what you’re reading. Most of the media we consume is purposely written at an eighth grade level like your local news paper or your favorite magazine. The New York Times and Wall Street Journal are good examples of media written at a between tenth and eleventh grade level, or even higher depending on subject matter like science and economics. States use different ways of measuring reading level. An accepted measure is the Lexile score. Some examples of score and grade level, and corresponding examples are as follows: You can see there is a pretty substantial difference between the Hobbit and challenging book like Pride and Prejudice. The point I was making was that these proficiency exams don’t really mean much in the real world, and tying them to graduation rates is misleading.
Stocks are going to crash because, according to Mitt Romney, all of the billionaires are going to buy art instead of stocks if the Democrats pass a wealth tax.
