No fucking way DC should be a state. Keep a small section as the District and let MD have the rest like they did with the portion of the original District that is now part of VA.
Its going to happen but do to the incompetency of democrats it will be a will be awhile. If DC or PR were conservative they would have states long ago.
DC should definitely be a state. The district has grown way beyond what was intended and those American citizens are totally disenfranchised and subject to national rule. After DC is a state there should not be any non-governmental residences in the district either. What has been going on with residents DC should be illegal.
That is the easiest way but Northeast and Southeast D.C. are the poorest and I dont see Maryland simply agreeing to take on such a financial burden with real estate that doesnt produce a lot of tax revenue. Northwest is the high priced real estate but it is relatively small compared to other sections. The problem with D.C. is the two largest landowners of prime real estate are the Federal Government and George Washington/Georgetown Universities who pay....little to no property taxes. You can change the main downtown portion into a district like.Vatican city and carve out the rest but why should MD take it? There is no benefit. Also the federal government is no longer surrounding the mall. D.C. has gone through some revitalization and government buildings have moved near Nationals Stadium close to Navy Yard and up New York Ave to a newly created NOMA area. There are also some.outisde of D C. in MD and VA. Cannot simply carve out the Mall.
There are federal government buildings all over the country. Is the Pentagon not a massive federal government building in VA? Making the Mall (and surrounding government buildings technically outside the Mall like SCOTUS) stateless would make sense. It’s ok if a few government buildings like the FBI HQ are in Maryland instead. Thanks to gentrification, DC has become quite wealthy. In fact, MD has the highest median household income of any state, but DC’s median income is higher. The city would hardly be a burden on the existing taxpayers. What it would do is make already blue Maryland the bluest state in the nation. Democrats would always have super majorities in the state legislature and a moderate Republican like Larry Hogan probably never would have been elected governor in 2014.
The land for Washington DC was ceded by Virginia and Maryland. About fifty years after it was created, the land ceded by Virginia was returned. If the residents of DC want congressional representation, they should return the residential areas of the district back to Maryland. There's no reason to create a new state that's only 68 square miles. The only reason Democrats are pushing for this is so that they can gain control of two additional seats in the Senate. I'm not even sure if it would stand up to Constitutional scrutiny if it were passed. You can make a much better argument for making Puerto Rico a state. That being said, it would take 60 votes to get it through the Senate without nuking the filibuster rule. Manchin & Simena aren't going to allow that to happen. This bill will be DOA once it reaches the Senate.
