The Dunning-Kruger effect originated in the true story of a couple of hopeless bank robbers who put lemon juice on their faces believing this would make them unrecognisable to the cameras. When I worked in anti-poaching in Africa for a few years I ran into some unbelievably stupid criminals. Poor intelligence combined with confidence can be very funny.
Some? I used to deal with poachers who thought expensive muti-magic (aka traditional witchcraft) would protect them from being caught. I had a .50 cal M82A1 and used it to shoot *trucks etc. (you need an armor piercing round, solid copper works well, cheap and easy to make). I found a little pouch with an old BMG round and some muti-man-magic bollocks in one. If these charms and such had not cost the guys a half a months income or more it would be ok, lucky rabbit foot but they paid a fortune for them. One of my guys sold the same little trick bag to another of these idiots. *destroying their vehicle was a very effective deterrent.
