  1. Yep. It may surprise you to learn this but it's possible for someone to write a book on what they should do, yet still not have the self-discipline to do it. It would be a good essay topic for the class: What did he get right and where did he go wrong?
In other news, JK Rowling has no magical abilities and Tom Clancy never served in the military.

First, you don't know me. Second, that's the kind of fashionable drivel that socialists like to say right up to the point that the decide they actually do need something.
Everyone needs food, shelter, etc. How many people would turn down a free house because that's "wealth" and "wealth" isn't important to them?

A little full of yourself much? I gave the example of someone who invests 90% just as a simple example, to contrast against those who take no responsibility for their financial future and risk becoming a burden on their neighbours. I didn't say everyone should be forced to do it, what I did say is that stealing from that person to pay someone else much less responsible is evil.

I'm a responsible adult who gives a damn, that's who. It's very fashionable these days to just tell people to do whatever they feel like at that particular moment with no consideration of the long term consequences. It takes a lot more courage and integrity to tell someone something they might not want to hear.
Furthermore, I'm not saying they shouldn't be allowed to make their own choices with their own money, I'm just saying that it's wrong to force everyone else to pay for them.

Because you have a military pension, which guarantees you have an income for the rest of your life, you mean. Of course you can spend more of your income on "experiences" if your retirement is already secured. It also allows you to take much larger risks with the stability of your day to day income.

Wrong. Try reading what I actually wrote instead of inventing strawman arguments and making gross generalizations to highlight your various prejudices.

Or I realize it's possible to take an enjoyable hike without flying to Africa to do it. A weekend out backpacking with your friends can cost as little or as much as you want it to.
Obviously you can afford it so good for you. If you can't, consider the Appalachian Trail or the PCT.

I threw a nice bachelor party for myself sailing for a weekend and spent almost nothing. Guys with boats like to sail. I knew a guy who knew a guy, and next thing we're having a great weekend.

If you can't afford it, you're most likely not doing yourself any favours by saying "it's an experience" and doing it anyways.
In my "experience" there are people who use the whole "it's about the experience" thing, are often using that as an excuse for poor financial discipline.
If you want to fill you passport with stamps and see the world, joining the military and doing it on uncle sam's dime may be a very smart way to do it. Taking on five or six figures of credit card debt while zeroing our your savings? Not so much.

It's actually kind of funny that you see yourself as an argument against this, as a military career is a huge exercise in self discipline and delayed financial gratification.

Or it's just a bad book full of bad or impossible to follow advice, occams razor and all. Maybe we should have Zsa Zsa Gabor write a book on marriage and have a required class in high school on that as well? You seem to be confused between fiction and alleged non-fiction in your analogies, by the way.

It's interesting that I said repeatedly that we simply have different views on what matters in life and that neither is right or wrong. You seem to be insisting that its your way or the highway. Everyone in the U.S. gets social security and medicare, and it turns out that even Ayn Rand apparently didn't consider that "socialist" at least for herself, so we already have a system that ensures no-one starves in old age that would be pretty unpopular among conservatives to dismantle if that's what you're calling for? I'm certainly not feeling any pinch to support the rest of these supposed freeloaders you seem so concerned about all your tax dollars going to, they represent far less of the budget than the welfare going to millionaire farmers, MLP tax breaks for oil companies, and wasteful defense spending. If I'm going to complain about anything unfair it would be something like, as I mentioned earlier, those like Devin Nunes' family getting huge amounts of farm subsidies while having wealth worth millions. I wonder why that doesn't consist of "stealing from that person to pay someone else" enough for you to speak up about it? I'd be interested to hear which specific "socialist" programs do you feel are far worse in magnitude and egregiousness than farm and tax subsidies to the very wealthy and more defense spending than the next 11 countries in the world, combined (and yes, I think my pension is too high and in fact they've already overhauled that military retirement system)?

Again, you and I simply have vastly different views on experience. I sail on the Chesapeake every Wed on someone else's boat, it's fun. I hike parts of the AP every year, also enjoyable. To say those experiences are at all comparable to my experiences on multi-week sailing trips in the Mediterranean or hiking the Inca trail or Patagonia would be like saying my experience flying on an Airbus from NYC to Boston was comparable to my time flying as a military pilot. That matters to me, not so much to you. And when I say that, I agree that I don't know you but you've posted several times about the importance of saving big parts of one's discretionary cash flow in order to build wealth so I'm going off that. Presumably you wouldn't have been saying that if you didn't believe it, but happy for you to let me know if I'm wrong. Your view is fine for you, I'm only asking you to realize that neither way of thinking is somehow morally wrong or right. No doubt if I had six figure credit card debt to pay for that and asked you to pay it off it would be wrong....last I checked I never advocated for that did I?

Speaking of the military and delayed gratification, again it's illuminating to see your thought process there. I image that if the pension was the main reason you were in the military, then yes, it would be miserable delayed gratification experience. In my view, I had the opportunity to experience things I could only experience in the military as a 23-40 year old pilot. Once it became sitting at a desk, I retired because I could do that much more profitably and comfortably behind my own desk. To me the military is exactly the type of age restricted experience you can only have once and was designed to milk every last experience out of....the pension was simply a nice side benefit which I now actually just donate to our service relief society.

Many people think I'm younger than real age, party because i put in a good word for Dr Suess some.
I did get several things from his book + the one he wrote with Donald trump. I never assumed his love of all debt+ options was good 100% of the time.
BUT several things are vey helpful in his books; much much better to work with a business man, business than be a gov dad drone in school system/LOL. But i dont agree with Lucy/peanuts cartoon with Lucy wanting to brickbat the schoolboard, OCT cartoon.
As far as his calling a home a liability/LOL maybe in HI; more likely just a shameless ad for leveraged rental property............................................................................
Good reminder, may reread his+ Don Trumps good but over leveraged book.

Nothing wrong about "looking" younger. You will see what I mean when you'll be older :D
Perhaps the "LOL" have a lot to do with it: I should try.
Just kidding Mr. Turtle, nothing else.

The Airbus flight would certainly be more terrifying I think. Think screaming babies and rowdy passengers, etc.

It's actually a memorable point in every new pilot's experience when you realize that you feel safer when you're flying rather than being in some other random pilot's hands. When I see what to me now look like kids flying the commercial flights, at least the regionals, I do kind of wish I was flying my own plane!

Especially with all the updated avionics and glass cockpits these days. Think they are constantly on top of their stick-and-rudder skills? I would wager no.

You're generally not even allowed to hand fly from 29,000' to 41,000', part of each airline's operating rules as part of the reduced visual separation scheme. I'm sure many of them are enthusiasts like I was and have their own little plane they get lots of practice with, at least hoping so!
