High Speed Internet

  1. So Kiwi: If I were to reduce my symbols on the watchlist to say 20 instead of 100 then would I be less likely to freeze up whenever there is increased market activity?................and does the number of computers I have hooked to the router make these problems more likely since I'm demanding more from my internet connection?

I'm having trouble even during quiet times with the platform "stuttering" just like someone is intermitently flipping on/off my connection with the broker where my prints stop on the ticker and then restart and where I'm unable to temporarily change the price on the order blank.........but on both computers during this stuttering all the other connections I have to other internet sites continues normally.

    Thanks in advance

  4. Verizon most likely has an issue with their equipment. There are programs, I have never used them, that can do a trace and help determine where the offending equipment is. Maybe someone with more knowledge than I can chime in.

    Hey Landis,

Since we are both in the Bay Area I did the identical tests as you. I have the 8mb Comcast service.

The NY test was almost identical. The SJ test was much better on my end.

I found that when Comcast hooked up this service I was getting around 20-30mb service which I thought was amazing. Then I put my router in the loop and the speeds reduced to 5-8mb. I discovered after hours of tech support that my router was old technology and possibly conflicting with Vista. I'm am now running a Linksys WRT150N which is running near full potential when no router is hooked up.

You may want to test with no router to see if it is limiting your speed.

If you can get FiOS, get it. Comcast did some crazy stuff when I had it.

  7. Dustin thanks so much for the FYI!

I recently upgraded to the Comcast "Blast" high performance service for an additional $10.00 per month. They advertise the proverbial "Up To 16mb" speed on downloads. I am now getting around 7.4mb back to the servers in NYC, and even better uploads than before, now up to 3.0mb per second across the board.

I am using a basic Belkin 4-port router ( with the latest firmware ) and was curious to learn if there was better router technology out there. Thanks so much for your post! But I believe that the router you speak of is wireless no? I will check it out. Perhaps they have a hardwired router too.

I too, get speeds of around 23 mb when I speedtest down to LA without my router. But this only occurs inside of California when one is still on the Comcast fiber-optic network. Outside of California, the router still has an impact ( slower DL speeds ) but not nearly as dramatic.

Seems like you should be getting much better download speeds to SF but your upload is very good. Wonder why I don't get that.

  10. Yeah, my uploads have been 3.0 across the board ( in and out of California ), with the "Blast" service. Originially, I was only getting 5.1 mb to NYC via Speakeasy server tests, now I am getting up in the 7.4 mb area with a 2.6 upload. I think that Comcast is dialing in the new service week to week . . . Try disconnecting your modem and doing a power cycle off/on.

What kind of a "wired" router should I get:
