High Speed Internet

  1. Does anyone know what the "best" service to get in NYC is? And by best I mean bang for the buck. Currently, FIOS is not available. Road runner cable is faster than Verizon DSL, but as mentioned earlier in this thread can tend to have more latency issues and goes down more often (allegedly) than DSL. T1 lines seem like an option, although generally way more expensive and appear to better for more users.

So NYers, what do you have?

I'm in Queens with Roadrunner premium, 20mbs Down, 1mbs up, ~15-45ms pings. In the 3 years I've been trading with them I've had 2 disconnects, both during a torrential rainstorm. Being the geek in the family I pray for the day VZ goes bust for all the heartburn they've given me diagnosing network problems for friends and family.

True cable is a shared system, but I routinely run speedtests during the day and 90% of the time its greater than 18mbs down. The system does slow down dramatically during weekends and some nights, but during the day its fine.

  3. Quick question.

If you could get a cable or dsl plan that were both rated for a download speed of 3mb, which architecture favors lower latencies? In my experience dsl is more reliable.

  4. It's hard to say IMO without some testing. It depends, on the amount of hops you take on the net to get where you want to go. Your ISP's could have agreements with other providers which you will not necessarily be aware of. ping plotter could test them both for free, but you would need to have service installed. See if you can get both installed on a 30 money back gurantee, that's what both of my providers, Comcast and Qwest offer, but I am very happy with Comcast so I just stick with them.

I just upgraded to Rogers Extreme Plus 18 Mbps.

I ran a speed tests this morning:

Is this worth the $99 per month ?

Perhaps. Depends on whether you use it or not...

I'm paying 149$/mo to my local cable provider for 10mbps service. (this is business service as the do not offer those speeds to residential customers.)

  7. Comcast just keeps increasing ( fine-tuning ) the download speed of its "Blast" service for $52.95 per month.

I am running McAfee Anti-Virus with a 4-port wired AirLink AR504 router ( great reviews on thru-put speed, if you can find one ) and I am now getting almost 17 MB back to Clifton, NJ from out here on the West Coast!

Make sure that you check your router.
I had a 5 year old Belkin that is the exact SAME model as what is currently availible, except for the fact that it was Version 1000, as opposed to the current Version 4000 and was not able to take advantage of anything above 7.4 MB on the dl.

Comcast (and maybe others) have figured out how to beat these speed testing websites with their "speed boost" technology.

In case you don't know what this is; For the first n seconds, comcast will give you a burst of bandwidth, afterwards, your bandwidth drops down to the regular speed. It skews the average (and max) speed results on these test sites. Thats why it looks like you might have 10mbits when you are only paying for a 6mbit service. Marketing genius.
