Help with my 1st GUN purchase

  1. I didn't know they were. I read there is a different, or modified M14 platform still in use as a sniper rifle to this day in certain branches.

Since you have experience with both, care to elaborate on your dislike of the ar-15?

Most of my "dislike" is the cartridge. The 7.62/.308 is simply more lethal and has better penetration. The AR15 rifle itself is just fine.

And yes they were breaking open crates of old M14's in Iraq, largely because of it's greater stopping power. One of the original arguments for the smaller round was the solider could carry more ammo. But if you have to shoot everyone one twice as often it kinda defeats the purpose.

  3. I wasn't doubting you. I was just saying I read it was still in service, it used to be the standard infantry rifle though and it was replaced by the m16, right?

didn't see your addition before i posted but i get your point.

Understood. I've shot so few stand up shots that my result isn't statistically significant so its just an anecdote. I brought my M1A with me today but nobody wants to go with me because its blowing about 35 mph. If it calms down Friday I'll give it a try. If the target needs to be 1ft x 1ft I'll probably start at 200 yds to see if I can even land hits on it and then move it out.

The reason I haven't shot "flat footed" very much is that the milsurp .308 I have was about a dollar per round and I always thought that if I had to actually use the gun on my property I would be kneeling behind rocks and resting the gun on solid objects or maybe I would be prone in extreme conditions. Stand-up shooting might be a good skill to master and I'm curious what my score would be if I shoot enough to ascertain what my consistent performance is. My driveway is about 2000 feet long and I've alway thought that in a SHTF situation I would stop vehicles at a narrow spot about half way up so I think its worth a hundred or so rounds to find out.

If you're like me, you'll be rather surprised at how poor your flat footed accuracy is. When I first started doing it, I could hit a target at 50 yards if I was lucky. Remember that you really have to take a shot within seconds of raising the rifle. Cover may not always be available, and you may actually have to fire standing up.

Instead of doing work or watching the market.
    I just read this thread.
I had avoided getting the gear thing going on guns.
But, I think I now have the bug.
I just bought my first shotgun and I am already reading websites about three gun concepts.

There is something strange going on. My brother just bought a glock and I know plenty of other people buying their first gun.

I think californians know that the spending can not continue forever and the chance for a breakdown in law and order is rising significantly as we elect weaker and weaker politicians.

Last thing we want is to be shut out of the gun market by the same weak politicians who are causing the mess.

You can get an AR chambered for the 7.62. I read somewhere the other day that the Army went with the 5.56 because being lighter it made it easier and quicker for the troops to put more rounds and more accurately on the target than with 7.62. Also, they could carry twice as much ammo with the smaller caliber.

I think of the 7.62 as something I would want in a sniper rifle. Although I've seen them on TV hit a target with a 50 BMG at about a mile which is really awesome. I can't even see a target at a mile! :D
