Help me buy a new car (and what about cars and gender?)

  1. What's wrong with it?

  2. Nothing really "wrong"...there was a scratch on the front bumper which needed to be touched up, and the cars are "programmed" to your preferences.

The sales dept. does the programming with a handheld computer (laptop?...didn't see). But the Z4 is too new, so they can only do it with the big computer in the service dept. Which was closed when I got the car on Saturday.

So I had to take it back...get the "daytime running lights" turned on, door locks to automatically engage when the car is moving, seat memory specific to each key (pretty cool...even using the remote on the key, if wife uses her key, the seat goes to her preference, I use my key, it goes to mine the moment the door is opened), alarm chirp on or off, stuff like that. Nothing big.

There seemed to be a problem with the A/C though. One time I would turn off the ignition, and then would have to turn the A/C system back on. Next time, it might resume where it was.

They were not clear on how it was supposed to be. They said the older 5 series had to be turned on each time.

Whatever, it should be consistent. Not hit or miss, so they need to A): find out if it need to be re-set or not each time, and B): make it do whatever it's supposed to do consistently.

All new cars are too complex thanks to computer chips. My Saab, when I first got it, the climate control was different with the top up or down, which makes sense (can't "re-circulate" with the top down), but if the motor was running and I would put the top up, the AC would start blowing heat. Perfect on a 90 degree day! Took a while to get it straightened out. Ended up being a bad chip.

In some ways, I miss my VW bug I used to be able to tune and fix myself when I was a kid. Now, there's no such thing as a carburetor. Or a spark plug you can even see for that matter.

And Max, why are you dodging me on when I get to buy you dinner (and cocktails)??

    Peace,
    :)RS

  3. Uh, you're awfully kind... it's not a franchise of Umberto’s Clam House that you have in mind?< gulp... >

  4. Like I said, your humor keeps getting better and better. I wonder how many here know the story about Umberto's?!?!. (well, now I can take a pretty good guess at what area of the country you live, (or did).

Anyway, no, your choice. (I can see eating my cup of soup and maybe a potoato, while hungrily watching you have a 5 pound lobster at the Palm, but a deal is a deal).

Just my "home area" as defined. We can call it the "MAX TRIANGLE".

    Peace,

  5. Miami or Coral Gables?

  6. Either is equally inconvenient for me.

I have a rich friend in Pinecrest. Maybe I can get him to come along and shame him into picking up the check.

Bangle strikes again. The new 5 series. You can't see it in the photos, but the chrome "eyebrows" above the headlights are really noticable when sunlight hits; double-ugly. I wonder if there would be a cottage industry in blacking those out.

  9. Hell no Max. I said I would pick up the tab, and I will. I was just kidding about my friend in Pinecrest.

You think I would want to "share" the opportunity to spend valuable time with you with someone who might not appreciate the honor??

    Peace,

  10. Have you seen one in real life?

Is that the car? Or a prototype? I can't imagine that that chrome would work. Hell, when was the last time you saw chrome (reflective) windshield wipers? Chrome there makes less than no sense. I agree with you completely. (maybe its' part of the conspiracy to sell more duct tape)

    Peace,

    :)RS
