When hedge funds closed the book on 2016, it was one of the worse years for the industry in memory. A basket of the industry's biggest holdings, however, is having a good start to 2017.

Goldman Sachs says that basket of the 50 favorite stocks held by hedge funds outperformed the S&P since the start of the year, returning 16% withMobileye(MBLY),JD.comtech(JD),Alibaba(BABA) andBroadcom(AVGO) topping the list of gainers.

In fact Goldman research shows that as of March 31, hedge funds had a tilt towards technology and consumer discretionary names.

Hedge funds lifted gross and net exposures to post-crisis highs and tilted further towards Info Tech and Consumer Discretionary favorites including “FAANG” (FB, AMZN,AAPL,NFLX, and GOOGL). These popular growth stocks rank at the top of our Hedge Fund VIP basket and helped the basket outperform the S&P 500 ... contributing to a 4% YTD return for the average equity hedge fund
Goldman’s equity gurus analyzed the holdings of 821 hedge funds with that managed about $1.9 trillion of gross equity positions in their latest Hedge Fund Monitor report. Based on 13-F filings, hedge funds bailed on steel companies, brewers hotel resorts and department stores.

Which stocks appeared most frequency among the largest 10 hedge funds holdings?

    Here are the top 5

    Facebook(FB)

    Amazon.com(AMZN)

    Alphabet(GOOGL)

    Time Warner(TWX)

    Charter Communications(CHTR)
