Hawking is brilliant but that doesn't make him infallible. He's made plenty of mistakes in his career (as does everyone) so it's foolish to take something that he or anyone else says as "gospel." Go back and read this article. Anyone at all scientifically minded and with a lick of common sense will realize that humans know far too little about the universe to make such grand pronouncements.
