Has machine learning, AI killed killed short-term trading opportunities?

I think that AI and HFT gets too much credit (or blame) from traders having a tough go of it. Likely because they don't understand it - and also because HFT and AI funds have themselves shown selective weakness and failures the past few years.

Maybe a more insightful premise would cite the number of HFT and AI funds that are themselves showing very weak performance in the Commodity space. For that matter, you are also seeing a noticeable population of HFT and AI funds in other spaces having some difficulties the past few years or so. These days HFTs and AIs have no choice but to compete with and indeed cannibalize their own.

It stands to reason that HFTs and AIs can't all be doing the same thing. It's not a universally successful trading strategy. There are definite winners and losers. HFT and AI for the sake of being in HFT or AI doesn't guarantee a thing in terms of success per se. It can't.
