I have AT&T DSL and Comcast cable, with a dual-WAN router. This has fail-over capability. My DSL is rock-solid reliable, but I didn't want a single point of failure for my trading machine. The model I use can also take a 3G card instead of an ethernet connection as the second WAN, so it would be compatible with your chosen backup connection also (it's a DrayTek Vigor 2920N). If you can get cable broadband though, I'd venture to suggest that it offers a lot more for your money than 3G (unless you need to be mobile of course).
