I'm not defending the school at all. In fact I am condemning them for having no backbone. I am merely pointing out the absurdity of the claim that this Shield is somehow racist at face value. Why are we chasing ghosts to find evidence of racism? Is there no current day racism to be found? How does this action help a black person today, right now? This is white leftists pandering to the black community, nothing more. Look at us, vote for us, we're with you. Any black man with an IQ over 70 should be insulted. Just another feel good, accomplish nothing gesture by the left. Frankly it's pathetic.
The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice. We see these statues getting taken down and symbols being removed Day by Day and one by one and have hard time trying to understand why people care. It’s because justice. Justice for every man, woman and child enslaved, who had their life stolen so somebody could profit. Taking down one slavers family shield is a small matter but it bends the arc just that much more toward justice.
throw some cash in to the mix in the form of reparations and that "long arc of the moral universe" will start changing mighty fast and start looking like the flight trajectory of a Boeing Max 737.
The family shield of the family that killed slaves is a good thing to honor and perpetuate? How about the swastika? Is wanting to wipe it out just pandering to the Jewish community? Should swastika aficionados show more backbone? Get woke, bro.
Except that 90% of the developed world's population recognizes and knows what a swastika is. There's a slight difference I think.
So the people who know what the family shield represents should keep everyone else in the dark? Not speak up? Because...ignorance is bliss? That's the difference you're referring to? Really?
Why? The case for reparations is meritorious and certainly has precedent. The injury of slavery, segregation, bias in state and federal law and policy was and is real. Regardless of generation, by all rites and tradition we can certainly compensate for injury. Is it practical, I say no but as far as whether it will sink the movement to remove vestiges of slavers and symbols of slavery I don’t see that either. The path we are on is the right path. Nothing is ever settled until it is settled right. No matter is you recycle old Dixiecrat arguments about culture and states right, the trajectory is against you.
Remember 3 things: The collective students, faculty and staff decided together to change the shield. Was not some outside group calling for a boycott unless the shield was changed. If they want to decide to change it themselves, that's up to them. It was not that the shield was deemed racist, it was that the symbol was taken from the family crest of a man who was a vicious slave owner with an many known atrocities and they want to remove HIS family crest from the shield. In other words disassociate the school with him, the guy. If a building was named after Bill Cosby and he got thrown in prison for repeated rapes and they decide to take his name off the building..same idea. THings like that have happened in the past. Harvard Law is a private school, only affects them.
Do we get to claw back all the welfare, other bennies and affirmative action hand-outs that went toward compensation over the years or deduct that from the hand-out? Oh, I see. You think Michelle Obama got into Princeton and Harvard Law on her academic strengths. Nevermind. That Harvard Law Seal must have been truly offensive to her and her future hubster while they were both there. Let's just say that if we ever saw either Barry's or Mooch's LSAT scores it would not be a pretty sight.
