Hardware diagnostics failure meaningful?

I'm getting ready to reinstall XP Pro on my Lenovo PC, so I ran the complete diagnostic program on the hardware, just to see if there might be any hardware problems. The cd drive failed, the test stopped after many failed sectors. I'm wondering, how reliable is such an indication? CD drives are cheap, but could it be something else? Thanks.

Could always "be something else"... if no error message to guide you, start swapping parts... easiest ones first. CDROM, hard drive, IDE and SATA cables.

When doing a fresh install, all of your peripherals should be disconnected... leaving mouse, keyboard, single video card, one hard drive, CD player only.

Thanks, gnome. And I will definitely disconnect everything. I hadn't heard that before...
