    I think on average it's 50% luck, 50% effort.

If you are born in a lower income household, your average income will be lower -- but the spread in that income is the result of free will and effort but also random chance.

If your parents are college educated, your average education level will also be college level, and again your average income will be higher, but there is always that spread.

If you are born tall, fair skinned, blue-eyed, in a wealthy family with a rich family history in a wealthy part of Europe or the US, the chances that you will end up wealthy is much much higher. But again, there is that spread. Even with all those advantages some of these people could end up homeless.

Luck and free will: it's a 50/50 contribution, I think.

"I had the blues because I had no shoes,
Until upon the street, I met a man who had no feet."

"Two men looked out from the prison bars,
One saw the mud, the other saw the stars."

"One of the best ways to make yourself happy is to make other people happy; One of the best ways to make other people happy is to be ..."

  3. I saw the movie "Marly & Me" last night.

A movie about the life of a couple and a dog....It's all there.

Happiness comes and goes...It just a change in me, something in my liberty.

    ES

    Happiness
    More or less
It's just a change in me
    Something in my liberty
    Oh, my, my
    Happiness
    Coming and going
I watch you look at me
    Watch my fever growing
I know just where I am

But how many corners do I have to turn?
How many times do I have to learn
All the love I have is in my mind?

    Well, I'm a lucky man
    With fire in my hands

    Happiness
    Something in my own place
    I'm standing naked
    Smiling, I feel no disgrace
    With who I am

    Happiness
    Coming and going
I watch you look at me
    Watch my fever growing
I know just who I am

But how many corners do I have to turn?
How many times do I have to learn
All the love I have is in my mind?

    I hope you understand
    I hope you understand

    Gotta love that'll never die

  4. define happiness
there is a difference in my book between happiness and joy
    things make you happy
but more things do not make you more happy
you can only be so happy
    joy is endless
there is no limit to joy

Must be nice to be born into a situation that allows you to accomplish the above task.

  10. Born into?

I see seniors all the time who are disabled and continue to smoke. Paula "Turducken" Deen has type2 diabetes. She blames in "in part" on her high fat diet, when of course it's far more likely due to genetics and her intake of simple carbs (VLDL).

$100/month buys one sufficient supplements to maintain health. $250/month to smoke a pack a day, or $100 in preventative med.
