All of that crap software that comes with your printer has TONS of free card designer stuff on it. Why pay $ for something you can do on your own, w/out a trip to a store? Which is exactly why print media is dying. Kodak is phasing out Kodachrome too. With a digital cam and a half decent printer, one can photo shoot anything and make as many copies as you wish, for almost no cost.
You can't produce a Hallmark with just ink. It shows you don't know the product, as there is a lot of process that goes into making a card, including flitter, flock, die cuts, laser cuts, etc. The common person cannot possibly produce as high a quality a card.
