The cradle of Western Civilization, the beginning of all that's good in the world of man today. It was the first society in recorded history which gave freedom a chance, what's known today as free market capitalism (i'm stretching it a bit). And even then it was only for the free class of men, the citizens, the slave class of course had no such freedom.

I wonder how far along humanity would have been today if it followed the course of Greece and early Rome instead of allowing it all to go to hell in the middle ages.

Either way, Greece itself needs to wake up. They should immediately get out of the European Union Soviet Socialist Republic immediately. Do away with 90% of their regulations, provide a sound currency and cut government spending by 90% or so and balance their budget. Still they would have to default or restructure their debt load, but if they turn towards the free market in a major way any and all the pain would be quite temporary and would set the stage for a massive come back. You can't continue down the path of socialism and survive for long above the level of other failed socialist states. And if you continue moving more and more towards socialism, all that waits for you is the fate of North Korea.

  4. i totally agree.... holding up failing countries and reducing volatility (buying the bottom out of crashes and depressions) only leads to super cycles in which the entire financial system collapses! localize volatility.. not freaking absorb and normalize it!

  10. US debt as a percentage of GDP is not much better than Greece. Those that live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.
