I'll use an old 42" Phillips flatscreen when i trade from a recliner or i want to keep an eye on a chart and move around. Sometimes it takes a couple dozen bars for a signal to develop an entry trigger. That can be a good time to watch charts on TV in another room. My good old Dell T3500 Nvidia NVS 295s have Displayports of no use on that TV, so i use a Dell laptop's vga picture, which looks better than its hdmi picture for some reason so i go with the vga. Too bad because the cable is shorter and no sound.

That said, to spot if a bar closes within two ticks of a line or is it greater than two is more exacting than watching a movie. This can tire the peepers quicker on a TV than on a monitor, so TV is an adjunct to a monitor but maybe not for all the time.

By the way, i have a Tritton SEE2 Xtreme USB External Video Card to push a 24" Acer. It did not work the last time i hooked it up. A side effect of the 32 to 64-bit windows switchover maybe. Too bad, that Tritton SEE2 was handy, i'd like to have it go again if anyone has suggestions...scat?

  2. A GTX 1660 is enough, or something lower than this but still, a good and cheap graphics card that will do it's job.

  3. You can buy DP-HDMI adapter on eBay or Amazon. Cost <$10. Works, sound comes through to the TV. I use one myself.

This is so wrong. I am a programmer and have been using 4k TVs for years.
My first was a Seiki 39". You had to go into a secret menu and follow some online directions to get it to work as a monitor. Basically, you turn everything off and adjust the contrast and brightness, etc. Better than any monitor I had ever used at the time.
My second was a Seiki 42". The needed menus were not secret. Still had to turn everything off.
The third was a 49" JVC. Never got this to give perfect text. It soon died (could still be used as a TV via the antenna).
The fourth was a TCL 55". It got sucked into duty as a TV before I tried it as a monitor.
The fifth was an onn. 50". Wow. During setup, when you first turn in on, tell it you are using it as a monitor. Done. Absolutely perfect. Of course, in monitor mode, there is no detectable lag and the text is super sharp.
    Walmart:
onn. 50" Class 4K UHD LED Roku Smart TV HDR

    $218

If I needed another monitor today I would get the onn. 55", $258.

Moral of the story; If you tried to use a 4K TV in the past without turning everything off, it was unusable. My onn. 50" is a no-brainer. BTW, these monitors have game-mode, and several other modes, in the menu. I haven't tried them.

Thanks for the info. The Nvidia geforce gtx 1660 has been mentioned twice and has good reviews so I think I might go for this card. I have a 9 year old T3500 Dell workstation which has been a work horse and hasnt had any problems to recently. The GTX 1660 have fans unlike my current graphic cards, do you think the fans could cause a problem to the old motherboard.

you have to make sure your power supply is able to provide power to the graphic cards.
and because the cards are thick (because of the fan), make sure you have sufficient space.
also make sure your motherboard can support dual graphic cards.

only thing I don't like is the fan noise.
my room is quiet. so the fan noise is rather irritating.

  9. For a trading rig, I'd forego the GTX 1660 (graphics power overkill for trading... besides, it's a 2-slot card... and you want run 2 of them?) and get something like the Nvidia NVS 310 or NVS 510. Low noise. Low power draw. More than adequate for trading rig.

Buy your NVS cards on eBay, used. They're "workstation" cards... designed to run quietly and for years and years. (I have 8, NVS 310s, 1, NVS 510, and 1 Quadro P620 (successor to the Quadro K and NVS lines)... and have used NVS cards exclusively for 15(?) years or more.... plus now 1, "Quadro P".

If you want to game on your trading rig, then by all means... power up!

Wow, I had never tried that. Went into display settings, changed from landscape to portrait. Worked! Of course, you would need a stand/mount.
