Good Question

  1. As you wish:

Politicians sould be held accountable by themselves, their peers, the media, and voters:

Part of the responsibility of politicans is to be responsive to the wishes of society. Where different ideologies have a different perspective on an issue, great effort by our leaders should be made in an attempt to either resolve those differences or to at least find a way to accommodate the side that does not prevail that are akin to “Splitting the baby”, where one side only prevails at the cost of the other. The wrongful death of George Floyd demands law enforcement reform that benefits all in involved, including law enforcement. I say law enforcement benefits because under reasonable reforms, there would be less ambiguity in what constitutes proper performance of their job.

Law enforcement should be held accountable by themselves, the courts, politicians, the media, and the people:

There appears to be a culture of unconditional loyalty among officers. While there are solid benefits to this way of thinking, a officer who does wrong will often not be held accountable for their actions. Peer pressure is a formidable determinant of our behavior. The lack of peer pressure and fear of prosecution allows those few officers who are unfit to serve to carry out their agenda or sociopathic tendencies. Further, officers often lie about material facts in the courtroom. I’ve seen it and have read credible accounts of it. Officers who willfully don’t follow procedures, lie, or otherwise engage in conduct not appropriate as a civil servant, should be held accountable through audits, body cameras, complaint history, and any other means necessary to ensure minimum standards of officer conduct are maintained.

Law enforcement is an exceedingly tough job. I can’t imagine the tremendous frustration and stress law enforcement officers go through in their careers. I can understand society tolerating some officer imperfection during the “Heat of persuit”, but once those handcuffs are on, the only thing left for the officer is often deciding whether to transport or let the subject go.

Protester actions should be held accountable by themselves, the media, politicians, law enforcement, and the court system:

The organizers of protests and the protesters themselves should establish acceptable form of conduct during a protest, specifically forbidding violence, property destruction, and looting. During the heat of the protests, it would seem reasonable for society to tolerate some vandalism. However, those who burn out business, looti, and or commit violence should be held accountable by other members of the group, their family, neighbors, law enforcement, and the courts.

We, including the George Floyds of our country, should hold ourselves accountable for our actions as well as by our families, neighbors, law enforcement, and the court system:

Responsible citizens don’t break laws, or if we do, we understand the necessity of following the instructions of law enforcement. Failure to follow the reasonable and lawful instructions of law enforcement should mean that you forego most claims of liability against officer misconduct. This idea would not relieve the officer from criminal liability for misconduct, but it may reduce the moral hazard of someone unreasonably challenging a law enforcement officer in hopes of a payout based on the officer’s misconduct.

We should never tolerate officer misconduct like what happened with George Floyd. Our elected officials and our media have an obligation to facilitate discussion of this issue, including riots, in such a way that bipartisan police reforms and policies regarding rioters are implemented.
