I was actually lucky to have a father who was very much into music, having played in a band himself. He had a record collection of an unbelievable size. When I was growing up, I used to play all his records on my record player (we'd go out to record world back when they actually sold records). I would bounce up and down on my bed singing along to the songs -- Like Alice Cooper's "Ballad of Dwight Fry." Unfortunately, a lot of the music today is not what it used to be, but I could be biased due to the fact that I grew up with a lot of my dad's music -- but a lot of those bands are timeless.
I enojy many of those albums, and also grew up listening to a lot of it. I understand your sentiment regarding new music, but there is a lot of good stuff out there. Classical music lasted a long time, maybe we'll see rock last equally as long. Check that thread about Indie music, find it on chit chat page two. Try some of those names I listed if you've the time.
