Maybe the moral of the story (though misleading in title) is "build 12 mi inland and put up panels like ours that withstand hurricane winds"?
I think the power issue makes a lot of sense in building hte lines underground but older cities and towns along the coast still have overhead lines. As for storm surge, pretty sure FL is a flat stick out into the water so the a hurricane hitting is going to do damage on the coast no matter what. truth be told most of the damage is from storm surge not wind due to FL building codes. The bridges to the Sanibel island did not get blown away, they got washed away .
'Why not raise it for the Red Cross?': Former Bush strategist questions DeSantis' private hurricane relief fund As Hurricane Ian bared down on Florida, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) started his own disaster relief fund, putting his wife in charge of it. Speaking to MSNBC on Monday evening, former strategist to President George W. Bush, Matthew Dowd, questioned the fund, noting that he was concerned about oversight. "First off, anytime that everybody raises a concern about leadership during a crisis, Republicans say don't politicize it," said Dowd. So, somebody is critical of Ron DeSantis in a hurricane; they say don't politicize. It the same thing they say after a mass shooting, when somebody brings out the fact that we ought to reduce access to guns, they say, 'don't politicize it.' Of course it is about politics, and of course the governor should be criticized, for any number of things, not the least of which he has spent no time on infrastructure in Florida, and all his time on critical race theory, on transgender issues, threats to businesses." There's also a concern about someone like DeSantis after Americans watched former President Donald Trump use a charity to squirrel away more money for himself. "He's used charitable organizations and raise money then no one knows, and no one can track where it ends up, but it's likely to end up in the pockets of the Trump family," said Dowd. "Of course, it raises issues. I don't understand why he's not raising the money for the Red Cross or for a number of established charities, why he has to set up his own charity in this.
As noted by many others, DeSantis' private hurricane relief fund is just a Trump-style grifty slush fund he will use to pay off his political backers. Not a dime of it will be used for legitimate hurricane relief that does not involve political kickbacks. Everyone should donate their money to legitimate organizations such as the Red Cross which actually helps the residents.
Yep... the authoritarian hard at work. The governor forces relief efforts to stop for hours so he can do photo-ops.
Was hairy for awhile Wed night to Thursday morning. We're east of Tampa, so we had some really strong gusts - 80/90mph and of course lost power. There's a massive, call it 60ft oak in the front of my house, and the house faces north. The wind was blowing from the north so it was blowing at the giant tree towards the house all night and I'm just standing in my front porch window watching the damn thing sway baaaack and foorrrth all night going "shit, if this thing cracks, my pals on ET (and the shitbirds like Mono) will never know what happened to me. But it stood. The house had no damage at all, I guess dropping 40k on new, upgraded roof back in May was a good idea. Since the lanai was on the southern side, nothing happened to it either. No screens were ruined, the pool was fine, all the palms did well. A few houses in the neighborhood had trees down, one against one of the house. I spent the day after helping neighbors clear their yards and driveways of debris (after waking early to do my own with my boy). Power went out Wed night, and didn't come back on until Saturday evening - but we have a whole house generator so we were golden. Other than that, the office - which was supposed to be in evac zone A never lost power and never flooded (water left the bay, didn't come into it because of the storm change). So that makes Irma and Ian. I'm a vet, I guess! Thanks for the well wishes to those classy enough to do so (looking at you, Usualname and Snarky - you're ok in my book!)
