Just because sins are covered at the cross like you say doesn't mean we should go out of our way to commit them does it? I believe that is what the 10 commandments are for?
The way I see it is that in order to put my whole trust in a book as being inspired by God, which is going to affect my frame of reference to the rest of the world, I want to only consider books that are fully authentic. There are reasons the Apocrypha are not included in the Protestant Bible. In my opinon, for my own faith, if there is already a known source of truth, such as the Torah (the first five books of the Bible, written by Moses), then nothing should be included that contradicts this. That is only logical, if Moses is entirely trustworthy.
