Let's take a look at how vigilante mobs patrolling a neighborhood usually turn out. Now let's discuss the proper way to have a security patrol in your neighborhood. Our area in Durham is enduring increasing crime. We placed security cameras which take pictures of all cars and the plates going in/out of our subdivision at every entrance. This system is run by a private company and the footage is available to the Durham police department for solving crimes. We also hired an armed private security company to have a car patrol the neighborhood at night. The employees of this security patrol are fully certified and trained (most are cops and this is their side job). So far (in the past six months) the security patrol has stopped one garage burglary & apprehended the suspect, gave CPR to a resident who was having a heart attack while the ambulance was on the way (who survived) and dealt with a homeless lady wandering the neighborhood aggressively ringing bells and knocking on doors at 1am (mental health issue). The core point is that both of these measures were excellent deterrents; crime has dropped sharply in our neighborhood this year. And it does not require a dangerous untrained vigilante mob to have this peace of mind. All of the funding comes out of our homeowner dues.
Community Policing works ! It has worked in our county. A message was sent, you come to our community to commit a crime, you will be chased and captured. Go get em boys!

What is a problem is the 35 minute response time when you call 911. So let me ask if some nutcase is pounding on your door and ringing the bell at 1am in the morning demanding that you open the door -- are you going to the open the door? Especially in view that some recent crimes involved a "decoy" pounding on a door "needing help" and when you open the door her accomplices barge in and do a home invasion robbery. Let's say the home belongs to an 82 year old lady -- should she open the door?
