  2. 38 Shot, 8 Fatally, in Gun-Controlled Chicago over Memorial Day Weekend

Thirty-eight people were shot, at least eight fatally, in gun-controlled Chicago over Memorial Day Weekend.

The murders are in line with what the city has witnessed over the past few years. ABC7 reportsthere were seven murders over the Memorial Day Weekend in 2017 and eight during the same weekend in 2016.

Chicago’s overall murder rate is slightly lower than it was last year at this point. USA Today reports there have been 191 murders year-to-date, whereas there were 237 murders at this same time last year. However, the murder rate is still high enough that it puts Chicago “on pace once again to record more homicides than any other American city. ”

In fact, “Chicago still has tallied nearly as many homicides thus far in 2018 as New York City (106) and Los Angeles (92) combined.”

This violence is occurring in a city where gun control has been the go-to solution for crime for decades. The city banned handgun ownership in 1982, only to see the murder rate skyrocket. The Chicago Police Department reported there were 850 homicides in 1993, 930 homicides in 1994, 921 homicides in 1991, and a startling 940 homicides in 1992. Yet the city’s leaders refused to lift the handgun ban, doing so only when the ban was struck down by the Supreme Court of the United States in 2010.

Even now, city and state leaders push for more gun control as the solution to the violence in Chicago. On March 8, 2018, Breitbart News reported that the Illinois House passed a bill designed to require 18-20-year olds to hand over theretofore legally purchased and possessed “assault weapons.” More recently, on April 3, 2018, Breitbart News reportedthat the Chicago suburb of Deerfield actually empowered their chief of police to confiscate residents’ “assault weapons” and “high capacity” magazines and destroy them.

'Surrender Your Firearms Within 24 Hours or Be Shot'
By Helen Smith May 21, 2018

I am reading a fascinating book by Stephen P. Halbrook from the Independent Institute called Gun Control in Nazi Occupied-France: Tyranny and Resistance. [IMG] The book describes the history of how the registration of firearms by the French government before World War II made it easier for the Nazis to disarm the French people:

Nazi Germany invaded France in 1940. In every occupied town, Nazi soldiers put up posters that demanded that civilians surrender their firearms within twenty-four hours or else be shot. Despite the consequences, many French citizens refused to comply with the order. In Gun Control in Nazi-Occupied France: Tyranny and Resistance, Stephen P. Halbrook tells this story of Nazi repression and the brave French men and women who refused to surrender to it. Drawing on records of the German occupation and testimonies from members of the French resistance, Gun Control in Nazi-Occupied France is the first book to focus on the Nazis’ efforts to disarm the French.

One of the most startling facts in the book is in the last chapter entitled "Liberation":

"There were three million hunting guns in France in 1939, according to the Saint-Hubert-Club de France, a hunting association."
...only 835,000 of three million hunting guns --less than one-third--were turned in by French citizens threatened with the death penalty for not doing so. That is an incredible testament to the inefficacy of gun control in the most extreme circumstances.

It is also a testament to the bravery of the French people who did not turn their guns in; some of those guns contributed to the Resistance and helped the Allies to win the war. "..[T]he only armed resistance in France until D-Day was conducted by civilians..."

Remember this the next time you hear someone mention that private citizens should not own guns.

A New Zealand man who had traveled to Virginia to meet a teen he communicated with online was shot by the girl’s mother Friday, officials said.

Troy George Skinner, 25, was shot after he allegedly smashed through a glass door and attempted to enter the Goochland home, Goochland County Sheriff James Agnew said.

Skinner bought duct tape and a knife after he arrived in the U.S., Agnew said. The mother saw Skinner enter her home and warned him a few times that she had a gun, then fired after he broke the glass door, according to Agnew. Officials said Skinner was struck in the neck and remains hospitalized.

“All I can say is the manner in which he attempted to enter that home in the face of a firearm pointed at him and the implements we recovered from him — the only inference is that he had very bad intent,” Agnew said.

The sheriff added that Skinner’s arrival to the U.S. was totally unexpected, according to Stuff.

Skinner will be charged with breaking and entering with a deadly weapon with intent to commit a serious crime, the sheriff said.

New Zealand police said they’ve offered their help to U.S. authorities.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

  10. She's just lucky it happened in Virginia and not the UK, or else the mom would be in jail. Of course, if she lived in the UK she wouldn't have had a gun in the first place and her daughter would probably now be under the control of a rape gang.
