I hope I can join the discussion with my own experience in gun ownership here in Brazil soon... As the article says, the call for the repeal of gun laws here and allow law abiding citizens to arm themselves had not been so great in decades... And Brazil is the perfect example of the failure and real results of anti-gun laws. Almost every older person here says that they felt much safer about 30 years ago and at that time, having a gun was not that big of a deal. Today, a gun permit is not issued even for shooting instructors.

Bolsonaro is far from being the ideal guy. He was nationalist, protectionist and not exactly an example of politeness... He seems to have learned quite a bit over the years, one of the best examples of this being his proposal to let all economic affairs in his possible government to Paulo Guedes, a brazilian economist educated at the University of Chicago, who has ideas very aligned with Milton Friedman and the Austrian School. Which goes completely against his former protectionist views...

But two things he always defended and was always right about were:
    1) Private property is sacred.
    2) He is famous for always saying: "When the people are armed, they are not slaves."

I don't have much faith in polititians in general, him included, but he unfortunately is the best option we will have in this year's election after decades of exclusively communist candidates.

If he is elected and there seems to be a great chance he will, that will signal to congress that people want this and possibly make it politically profitable for legislators to repeal the gun laws.

At that point, he is also making it very clear that he will "break Taurus' monopoly", which is virtually that, because the former government restricted even police from getting pistols and rifles from other brands except the brazilians Imbel and Taurus. There are policemen that eventually carry Glocks and some "elite forces" have more freedom to acquire other brands. But the general rule is just the 2 I mentioned(Taurus being the overwhelming majority).

He actually said this in one event at the Taurus factory in Brazil, holding a new rifle they'd made and saying they did it, because they know they'll have to compete with foreign brands if he gets elected...:D

So, let's see how this goes, it'll be hard and I unfortunately don't have much faith in it, but I would say we're close as we've never been in decades to getting that freedom back.

Wow! How mature of you! Judging by the level of matureness of your answer, the 16 in your nickname is probably your age...:)

But hey, everyone is entitled to an opinion... So you think it is boring? Don't read it...;)

That’s a new one! So I’m a white supremacist, batshit crazy, drug lord who supports the NRA. Did I miss any other accusations?

At least I don’t "experiment" with my brother, right?

Do you have any reason to suspect he is not from Brazil like he claims? Or is it just another example of you calling BS on anyone here from the right side of the political spectrum without any proof, just to troll (your M.O.)?

We can always ask Magna to verify his IP is posting from South America. I'm sure he would tell us.

Good article. Perfect case study in how removing guns from circulation only removes them from those who follow the law. Criminals keep theirs and everything becomes a lot less safe.

For the 100th time, liberals aren't interested in targeting gun crime. If they were, they'd be focusing on inner city gun violence. Look at Futurecurrents in this very thread. Not a single post talking about inner city gun crimes despite that being the part of the country with the most gun deaths BY FAR. Not one post about it anywhere on the forum. No, he's just interested in taking guns from the citizens that follow the law, where only a tiny, sliver of a percentage of owners actually commit any crime whatsoever with a gun.

That's how you know the narrative is bullshit.

It is bullshit, just like every single socialist/communist project that always proclaims to have one intention, while having the exact opposite effect in the real world... And despite that being obvious and proven in so many cases (vis a vis my own country and Venezuela, in an even more extreme case), people still fall for that narrative.

That is why, despite what the article says, my best option is still to go through the process of becoming an american citizen... The cleverness of the 2nd Ammendment is extremely appreciated by people like me, because it probably anticipated people's tendency to fall for that bullshit and naturally set the course in the direction every country on Earth took, except the US(thankfully).:)

This happened a few days ago here... And what do you know? The guy with a gun was using it in a school...

For those who want to doubt it is a school, aside from the bunch of children and their mothers, the parking space in the lower left corner of the video had "Esc..." written in it. School in portuguese is "Escola", which is written in full in these types of parking spaces, even though only the three first letters can be seen.

Yes, she was an officer off duty, but the logic applies all the same: In a country with serious restrictions to get a gun legally, every bump that wants to get one to commit crimes, has access to it. And the victims can only hope that they are very fortunate to have a police officer off duty or on duty nearby at the exact time this type of thing happens, which is obviously a very low probability thing to happen. Maybe if the guy thought there was a greater chance of anyone else being armed around him, he would not even have tried it, because the chances of this happening would be far greater. He ended up dying on his way to the hospital...
