Does the Java 6 really speeds up TWS?

Do not make the change (unless IB has changed its message).

The IB message to people asking for support was that we currently support java 1.5.0 so get 1.5.0_11 but until IB declare support for 1.6 you'd be better running TWS on 1.5

 

I would second that. I'm using TWS 870.2 and I tried Java 1.6.0_01. Stop orders placed in BookTrader did not trigger correctly (I was using a double bid/ask trigger). It happened twice, and then I switched back to 1.5.0_11.
