Even euronews (rated "least biased") the most flat boring fucking news on this earth.. So if Orban hates Soros, and American authoritarian have their flying monkeys out for curious George, probably something he is doing to upset these evil men? https://www.euronews.com/amp/2020/04/20/analysis-how-should-the-eu-deal-with-totally-incompatible-hungary Last Friday, the MEPs passed a resolution condemning the Hungarian government's actions during the coronavirus crisis as “totally incompatible with European values.” It pleaded with the European Commission to look at whether Hungary had breached EU law, and urged the Council to put Article 7 (where EU countries can have their membership rights, such as voting, suspended because they don't meet the bloc's core values) back on the agenda - part of an ongoing effort to battle a seemingly authoritarian Viktor Orbán.
Yes.... the entire situation has a long sordid history. But Hungary is not the only NATO EU member who has placed restrictions on Soros' activities which were undermining the country. I will note that as of 2019 - Soros' Open Society Foundation has been banned from 6 countries; Philippines, Hungary, Russia, Turkey, Pakistan, and Poland. You don't see the Gates Foundation being tossed out of countries.
However, to be clear, the reason the Open Society Foundation (OSF) has been active in Hungary is two-fold, Hungary is Soros's native country, he founded an important University there which Orban has tried to shut down, and the OSF has sponsored political groups hostile to the authoritarian Orban. I recall Soros mentioning at Davos that the University may be forced to relocate. Orban, like Trump, like Erdogon, like Bolsonaro and like Putin, is an authoritarian leader attempting to consolidate power in himself. These leaders all represent a danger to the survival of democracy. Of course Orban will do what he can to shut down the Open Society Foundation's activities in Hungary. It is decidedly not the OSF, however, that is a danger to democracy, but quite the other way around. There is so much disinformation re George Soros that it is understandable that many have an incorrect picture of his politics and interests. This disinformation is wide spread on the internet. It originates mainly from countries that have authoritarian leaders hostile to democracies, and then it is parroted ad infinitum. In Putin's Russia, one of the countries extremely hostile to Soros's OSF, there are elections in which the people vote, but I don't believe anyone outside of the authoritarian countries would characterize Russia as a democracy. In true democracies, the opposition candidate is not routinely jailed or murdered. In the United States, for example, the outgoing President has been calling for the locking up of his political opponent from before his election up to, and including, the present time. He is also interfering with the smooth transition of power to the newly elected President and insisting the election was "rigged". Actions typical of authoritarians.
This is not an apt comparison. The Gates Foundation stays out of politics. It is involved in humanitarian causes. Soro's Foundation (OSF) is directly involved in politics by fomenting political trouble for authoritarian governments. He is a strong believer in individual human rights and democratic government. (small "d"). But let it be understood that Soros has also given many millions to purely humanitarian causes over the years. These latter activities are not, however, the activities that have aroused the ire of tyrants world-wide. It is hard to stand up to a tyrant without pissing them off. Just ask the fired Inspectors General in the U.S.!
I sincerely hope not. We need him. Who else will step forward to protect the rest of us from authoritarians. Not many I would say. And perhaps no others at all with George Soros's means.
