shummi dont stand a chance now; he has to win the next race and alonso's car has to suffer a catastrophic failure that put him outta the race. odds are astronomical; spaniard only need to finish 8th, and even if shummi wins he'll be champ... but hey, who would have guessed ferrari would break down after 5yrs without an engine blowout.
Wow! What a race. The newer, smoother racing surface and smaller plate sizes created a race with quite a different feel than past races at Talladega. With fewer caution flags, and an increase in Green Flag Pit Stops, it looked early on as if the race might actually run caution free. Unfortunately, Gordon (#24) found himself caught up in someone else's mess and the 22 minutes he spent in the garage relegated the DuPont Chevy to a 36th place finish (unofficially). However, once again, Jeff Burton (#31) helped out when he cut a tire with ten laps to go. Burton's 27th place (unofficially) finish helped out the rest of the chase field - moving Gordon from 216 point s back (at the time) to around 160 points back of the championship by race end. Of course, the last lap antics of Brian Vickers (#25) wrecking fellow Hendrick Driver Jimmy Johnson (#48) and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. (#8) in order to grab his first victory, should make for some interesting conversation back at the garage. At post time, NASCAR still hadn't sorted out the finishing order beyond 11th place. Continuing ... - Spydertrader
Brain Vickers, on Sunday, hooked teammate Jimmie Johnson on the final lap at Talladega. The ensuing chaos gave Vickers his first Nextel Cup Series Victory. - Spydertrader <img src=http://www.elitetrader.com/vb/attachment.php?s=&postid=1225953>
Hey Spyder, Didn't Vickers do the same thing to Mike Bliss a couple of years ago in the qualifier for the All Star race at Charlotte? I forget if it was Vickers but I believe he wrecked Bliss right at the line. NASCAR should have DQ'd him as that was clearly deliberate. As for yesterday, I don't think it was intentional. It looked to me like he was actually trying to stay with the 48 and push him by Junior, but he messed it up. The boo's cascading down on him in Victory Lane were impressive. Haven't heard anything like that since the Texas race that they gave to Gordon over Junior when there was a last lap yellow. That was the one that the fans of the 8 showed their brand loyalty by pelting the track with empty Bud cans. Say, what happened to the 20? He and the 9 car went to the front like they were on nitrous, then suddenly he was 25 or something.
Yes. Vickers spun Bliss to win the Nextel Open Qualifier back in 2005. As a result, the win allowed Vickers to advance while Bliss went home. In the words of Chad Knauss, "Vickers was trying to do something when he ran out of talent." I especially liked the audible chants of Bull-shit! Bull-shit! Bull-shit! heard during the Victory Lane Interview. Stewart found himself collected up in a wreck on lap 173. - Spydertrader
And Cheater Chads' driver has run out of talent, wrecking more cars at Dega than the Bodine brother - COMBINED. In fact, he's the one that nailed Edwards from behind, turning him and helping to cause the wreck in turn 1 that took out Gordon. I wonder if ol Chad thought the same thing about Gordon at Chicago or his own driver earlier in the race. It was a racing deal, nothing more. Vickers doesn't have a history of doing this on a regular basis like some of the bigger names in the sport. I would have loved to have seen Vickers go with JR since he's not really a teammate, Gordons word, and isn't allowed or invited to attend team meetings since announcing he's leaving. If the roles were reversed, Jimmy Jerkoff would be employee of the month at the shop. Jerkoffs team is the ONLY one whining about it... JR sure isn't. I was waiting for Jerkoff Jimmy to start crying when they interviewed him. LOL Any day Jimmy meets an early demise is a great race, IMO. Here's to a bottle of Pamprin for JJ, I hope the bloating and cramping go away soon for the crying bitch.
CONCORD, N.C. (AP) -- Lowe's Motor Speedway is beefing up security for driver Brian Vickers after angry race fans called the track to complain that Vickers wrecked Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jimmie Johnson on the last lap at Talladega. The Nextel Cup Series is scheduled to race Saturday night at Lowe's, and track owner Bruton Smith felt the need to offer Vickers assistance because of the flood of phone calls the track received Monday. ``We want to make sure Brian has an uninterrupted weekend here and that he is able focus on his driving duties,'' Smith said. ``We will offer security escorts in and out of the speedway and anywhere he feels he needs our assistance.'' A spokesman for Vickers and Hendrick Motorsports was unaware of Smith's gesture until reached by The Associated Press for comment. Vickers was running third on the last lap Sunday at Talladega Superspeedway when he followed teammate Jimmie Johnson in his attempt to pass Earnhardt, the leader. But Vickers ran into the back of Johnson, sending him into a spin that wrecked the two lead cars. Vickers scooted by for his first career victory, and was showered with boos in Victory Lane as fans also threw debris onto the track. He's expected to be poorly received at Lowe's, the track that shares a sponsor with Johnson and sits in the shadows of Earnhardt's hometown of Kannapolis. Smith said this isn't the first time he's beefed up security for a driver. ``I think the last time was for Rusty (Wallace) when he knocked Darrell (Waltrip) out of the way to win the All-Star race back in 1989,'' Smith said. ``We added security at his house and track the week of the Coca-Cola 600.''
