  2. The fight pictured from the 1979 Daytona 500, and the incident when Jimmy Spencer punched Kurt Busch in the mouth each had nothing to do with 'gaming the system' as you call it. The Cale Yarborough / Allison Brothers fight occurred after a last lap crash broadcast live on CBS, and Spencer punched Busch after Kurt drove his car up to Spencer's Semi Hauler and then ran his mouth.

  3. The TNT Cable network plans to broadcast the Gatorade Duels at Daytona Today (Thursday) beginning at 2:00 PM Eastern Time. This unique qualifying format sets the field for Sunday's Daytona 500.

  4. Thanks for the heads up... I'll be tuning in! Do you have a pick yet for the race, Spyder?

  5. In 1995, I attended my very first NASCAR Race at Michigan International Speedway (M.I.S.). Friends of my father started a pool among the various fans camped out next to the track. For twenty dollars, you drew two driver names from a baseball cap. The pool paid out half for the winning name and half for the last place name. I drew Sterling Marlin and a young wunderkind by the name of Jeff Gordon. While Gordon didn't win the race that day, he often battled for the lead until a late race "mysterious caution flag for debris" trapped him in the pits - one lap down. I recall thinking then, damn this kid is good. I have been a Jeff Gordon fan ever since that day, and four Nextel / Winston Cups later, I remain a fan to this day. Although Gordon already has his spot locked in for the Daytona 500 (he qualified second), I'll still be rooting for him to win both Today and Sunday. Who do you root for?

P.S. Rusty Wallace won the race that day back in 1995 driving the Miller Genuine Draft Car.

  6. I root for Gordon too, he's a heck of a talent. For the most part, I go for the veterans that aren't signed w the big owners, the underdogs so to speak. I don't have an absolute fave though... I don't worship Jr, and I don't hate Busch! I wish it was more driver vs. driver than Hendrick vs. Roush, even though I like most of the drivers on the teams.

  7. A few 'Old School' Fans of Dale Earnhardt (The Man in Black, not the son) instructed me on the Karma Rule while attending the Southern 500 at Darlington several years back. They considered it 'bad form' to root for a driver (you hated) to experience some sort of mishap while on the track racing. As a result, I don't root for Kurt Busch to have an up close and personal conversation with the outside retaining wall. However, The Karma Rule does not prohibit the expression of contentment should the aforementioned incident occur.

    Let's Go Racing!

  9. It's raining... figures.

  10. Based on the weather outlook, the rain delay shouldn't last too long. The one upside to a late start is the amount of time the networks spend talking to the many drivers. During a rain delay, the pit reporters all scramble to interview many of the teams - even the guys who don't normally finish in the top ten.

Edit: Race to start in about five minutes according to the talking heads on TNT.
