Following three back-to-back days with more than 20,000 cases, the U.S. has recorded over 48,000 new coronavirus cases on Friday, the highest since early May, according to the data from Johns Hopkins University. The last time the U.S. COVID-19 case numbers surpassed 20,000 for four consecutive days was in late May. While the number of deaths has not seen a significant rise, CDC director, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, previously said that over 99% of mortalities due to COVID-19 were among those who remained unvaccinated. As cases rise, the CDC recommends COVID-19 testing for all those with symptoms in the upper respiratory tract, regardless of their vaccination status, Dr. Walensky told CNN on Friday.

The out-of-control fire has crippled the key California Oregon Intertie transmission system that is critical for California's electricity imports, which also has strained another key import hub - the Pacific DC Intertie - that brings in electricity from the Pacific Northwest. In all, Bloomberg reports California has lost 5,500 MW of power import capacity, enough to light up 4.13M homes.
