More than one third (37 percent) of U.S. bridges—nearly 231,000 spans—need repair work. More than 46,000 bridges are rated in poor condition and classified as “structurally deficient.” A total of 81,000 bridges should be replaced.

Structurally deficient bridge, on average, are nearly 69 years old, compared to 44 years old for non-deficient bridges.

At the current rate, it would take over 50 years to repair these structures.

Now that vaccines are well underway and the covid relief bill has passed, Washington is turning towards infrastructure. Infrastructure has been an ongoing topic seemingly forever, proving that getting non-partisan support is fairly difficult. With the Democrats in the driver's seat, getting a bill through should finally be achievable.

Regardless of how elaborate and expansive the infrastructure bill ultimately becomes, rest assured bridge repair, replacement and newly constructed will be addressed. The article, With Covid relief passed, Biden prepares to stake his presidency and Democratic majorities on infrastructure, published March 10, 2021, on CNBC quotes a Raymond James analyst with:

Do not think of the infrastructure bill as just roads and bridges. Democrats view an infrastructure bill as the ‘infrastructure’ necessary to build the economy of the future.

  5. Par for the Course: Eatertainment
At the end of 2016, Newcastle Investment Corp de-REITed and changed its name to Drive Shack, reflecting its new focus not just on golf but specifically the “Eatertainment” variety.

The core concept is to offer vibrant venues that would attract a younger clientele, especially groups of friends or family, or nights out for work colleagues. The sites had to be within easy travel distance of dense urban populations, and so were constructed as multi-story buildings with technological enhancements to allow a golf experience within a much smaller lateral footprint than required for a traditional golf course.

Management’s insight was that the best way to be selected as the venue by a group, is to not be hated by anyone, and this happy status can be achieved by having a wide variety of offerings.

Drive Shack therefore rapidly expanded its spectrum of activities and meals, and ensured that even non participants in the activities could have an enjoyable time.

The company’s prime venues for this are spacious three-story driving ranges that are partly indoors and partly outdoors, with many dozens of sectioned-off areas that social groups can rent, offering both golfing and non-golfing games, and a full service restaurant and bar.

A major element of the new style was incorporation of the superior “Trackman” technology that uses two radars, instead of one, to properly locate and track the ball and club in three-dimensional space. The software provides both coaching in stroke skills, and the ability to play in virtual fashion, dozens of famous international golf courses.,,,,,< --- essentially the same exact idea as in the 1980's place I went to!

These guys own many golf courses as well.. the Times says golf is way up due to the pandemic....

  7. “An immunity passport is a presentable proof of immunity to Covid-19,” said Husayn Kassai, co-founder and CEO of Onfido, a London-based technology company specialising in facial biometric certification. “It is designed to help an individual prove that they have been tested and that their test result belongs to them, but without having to share any personal information.”

Immunity passports are currently being examined primarily for the benefit of frontline medical workers, allowing them to continue working safely with reduced risk of an outbreak in hospitals.

An immunity passport is a presentable proof of immunity to Covid-19

In April, Onfido was invited to submit a proposal for digital health certificates to the UK Parliament’s Science and Technology Committee. In their proposal, Onfido casts immunity passports as “the linchpin of a new normality”. They would allow users to create a digital identity by uploading an official document (such as a passport or driver’s licence) along with a selfie taken on their phone, which would be verified using AI technology. The identity would then be paired with a certificate of immunity issued by a national health service. The end result would be a code on their phone that could be scanned to enter workplaces, public buildings or even airports. Onfido would provide the technology to verify users’ identities, but it would be up to the UK government to securely manage the health data and introduce a system of testing for immunity.

did finally find a cheap sustainability fabric company. it's sustainabilty and it's tech and it's another weird penny australian stock....so...not sure if i have it in me to buy another one of these.

but i do have this working thesis that all the US sustainable stuff is hugely inflated, but if you can buy this stuff cheap elsewhere and sit on it that eventually money will come. stock price spiked in january when they filed for a patent with Grasim Industries Ltd [NSE:GRASIM] (and wow, i just looked, Grasim has a really good chart for the last year...wonder why). i don't know the patent involves making fabric out of something sustainable....seaweed, air, potatoes....not sure.
