Joby and Toyota Expand Partnership with Long-Term Supply Agreement for Key Powertrain and Actuation Components

Santa Cruz, CA, Apr 27, 2023 — Joby Aviation, Inc. (NYSE:JOBY), a company developing all-electric aircraft for commercial passenger service, today announced it has signed a long-term agreement with Toyota Motor Corporation Inc. (NYSE:TM) to supply key powertrain and actuation components for the production of the Company’s aircraft.

The agreement builds on the long-standing partnership between Joby and Toyota, which has seen the two companies collaborate on a wide variety of projects to support the production and assembly of the Joby aircraft, including advising on the design of Joby’s pilot production line in Marina, CA. Toyota is also Joby’s largest external shareholder, having invested around $400 million in the Company.

JoeBen Bevirt, founder and CEO of Joby, commenting on the agreement, said: “Our partnership with Toyota continues to be an integral part of Joby’s success, from assisting in the design of our pilot production line in Marina, California, to supplying key components for our aircraft.”

“I’m grateful for Toyota’s unwavering dedication to Joby as we work together to deliver a new form of fast, quiet and emissions-free mobility for cities and communities around the world. Their expertise and knowledge has helped put us on track to deliver, at scale, an aircraft that we believe is truly best-in-class.”

The components, designed by Joby and manufactured by Toyota, will be delivered to Joby’s powertrain and electronics manufacturing facility in San Carlos, California, before the finished assemblies are shipped to the Company’s pilot production line in Marina for integration. Intended to prove out scalable tooling and processes at low volumes in advance of aircraft production at full scale, Joby’s Marina facilities were designed with Toyota’s help, leveraging decades of experience delivering reliable, high-quality cars at high volume.

Toyota Motor Corporation Connected Company President Keiji Yamamoto added: “We are very pleased to have reached this milestone with our key partner. Our mutual goal is mass production of eVTOL and helping Joby apply the best practices of the Toyota Production System in meeting high quality, reliability, safety, and strict cost standards.

“We are excited about the potential for further collaboration as we seek to realize Mobility for All with a seamlessly integrated air-to-ground mobility network.”

Joby is working with Toyota subsidiary Aero Asahi on an air taxi shuttle service for Toyota related passengers in Japan. Joby recently announced it has formally applied to the Japan Civil Aviation Bureau (JCAB) to validate its planned Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) aircraft type certification.

    Who's making parts for Archer?
    Chrysler Fiat?

Bunch of junk. It's one thing to get stranded in a Dodge mini-van because something breaks, and it's another thing to come tumbling out of the sky.

If I'm getting in an air-taxi... it better say Honda or Toyota on the side.

I'm half tempted to have EVTOL week... but these are serious times.

The noise of the new air taxis if Elon is on to it -- big problem. Drones are annoying already and they are tiny.

Now I have seen some secrete Musk stuff I think TSLA is working on their own concept which will be more of a hover craft with the blades contained in the vehicle...

but these guys Lilium--> they have a concept-

  7. Archer claims this:

    • Low noise. Designed to cruise at approximately 2,000 feet, the design of Midnight is such that the noise that reaches the ground is expected to measure around 45 A-weighted decibels (dBA), almost 1,000 times quieter than that of a helicopter. During forward flight, the aircraft’s tilt propellers spin on axes that are aligned with the oncoming air flow, rather than edge-wise to the flow, as is the case with traditional helicopters - further decreasing noise levels. Since Archer’s aircraft is spinning 12 small propellers rather than one large rotor, it can also spin them at significantly lower tip speeds, resulting in much lower noise levels.

  8. I think we will see flying cars racing in our lifetime.

Especially if we take the young one's blood...

    The Airspeeder Mk4.

Aerospace company Alauda Aeronautics (Adelaide, South Australia) has announced development of the Airspeeder Mk4, built to be the world’s fastest hydrogen-electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) flying race car. Capable of reaching a top speed of 360 kilometers per hour (225 miles per hour) in just 30 seconds from a standing start, it is designed to set the bar for performance and technology in the new sport of piloted Airspeeder racing.

The crewed flying car, comprising a carbon fiber monocoque, is designed for maximum agility at high speeds and low altitudes. It features a sophisticated electric propulsion system, advanced aerodynamics and a takeoff weight (MTOW) of just 950 kilograms. The Airspeeder Mk4 is also said to be highly efficient, with a projected range of 300 kilometers (188 miles) while producing near-zero emissions.

“We, and the world, are ready for crewed flying car racing,” Matt Pearson, CEO, Alauda Aeronautics, says. “We have built the vehicles, developed the sport, secured the venues, attracted the sponsors and technical partners. Now is the time for the world’s most progressive, innovative and ambitious automotive brands, OEM manufacturers and motorsport teams to be part of a revolutionary new motorsport. In unveiling the crewed Airspeeder Mk4 we show the vehicles that will battle it out in blade-to-blade racing crewed by the most highly-skilled pilots in their fields.”

The Airspeeder Mk4 is powered by a 1,000-kilowatt (1,340-horsepower) turbogenerator that feeds power to the batteries and motors. Specifically designed for use in eVTOLs, the technology enables green hydrogen to be used as fuel, providing safe, reliable and sustainable power over long distances and flight times. In addition, Alauda Aeronautics’ demonstrator “Thunderstrike” engine incorporates a combustor made using 3D printing techniques developed in the space industry for rocket engines. The combustor’s design keeps the hydrogen flame temperature relatively low, reducing nitrous oxide (NOx) emissions.

Unique to the vehicle is its gimballed thrust system, which uses an artificial intelligence (AI) flight controller to individually adjust four rotor pairs mounted on lightweight, 3D-printed gimbals. Ultimately, this makes the Mk4 handle “less like a multicopter and more like a jet fighter or Formula 1 racing car.”

    Close-up view of the cockpit.

Alauda Aerospace plans to begin flight testing the Mk4 chassis and powertrain, including the first crewed flights of the airframe, in the first quarter of 2023. The aircraft will be ready to take the start line at the Airspeeder Racing Championship in 2024.

The company is already looking beyond racing to a world where private flying cars are a daily reality, and a viable means of urban transport. Its team of engineers and designers, drawn from companies including Airbus, Boeing, Ferrari, MagniX and McLaren, are confident its technologies could make air travel faster, more efficient, more environmentally friendly and more accessible than ever before.

“You will see these technologies on the racetrack. However, eVTOLs are already a trillion-dollar industry and we see a very substantial market for private flying cars emerging in the near future,” Pearson says. “In conventional aerospace, there are about as many private jets as there are commercial jets in operation. We believe it could be the same with flying cars one day, with a roughly similar number of commercial taxis and private cars initially. Once we can sell you a flying car for the same price as a Tesla, you’ll quickly see the balance shift. Today, private cars outnumber taxis by about 300 to one, so the potential for people to own and drive their own flying car one day is enormous. It’s a very exciting time.”
