Through the years for my own trading I have backtested and used optimizing softwares to find best EMA's and then I will look at 4 above and below level of both EMA's and always makes for great crossovers to turn into losing for me. So just using crossovers I will never use for entries. I been using 18sma since start of my career in trading, slope and price Thrust has worked best for me to define trend. I don't like stochastics much, again never tested well enough for me using, have used RSI a number of ways to give signals and different approaches of retracement, I don't care much for breakouts after retracement to 18sma, I prefer to enter when knife is falling then to wait for confirmation that it is rebounding. The larger the timeframe, perfect entry not as important as money management of after one enters.

  2. Agreed. EMAs are nice for confirmations only. i think these have to be used for long-term equities trading, no way to be used in futures trading. futures too fast. i would guess EMAs are used so much in equities, that they just out of comfort look at them for futures trading.

Do EMAs even work in backtesting as a stand alone?

I sometimes use EMA cross for an automated stop if i have a position but i am unable to stay at home to close it myself.

Do you feel that detracts from his posts, per se?

  6. I kind of talk alot, or comment here, too -- but I have never posted any trades or advised others too.

Posting trades or advising others is kind of meaningless...you can only talk/teach so much, beyond that...it's up to the trader to release his magic in the market battlefield o_O:cool:

Everything is just noise and bs in the marketplace, except bottom line results and performance -- it would be cool, if somehow, we can post our real live trading acct performance on this site as a mouse over hover function or something.

I've seen forums with that kind of facility, but I think it's probably fair to say that the majority of people who use it have some kind of promotional agenda, and there's perhaps no obvious reason for people without a promotional (or at least self-promotional/egotistic) agenda to want to do that.

  8. I have tried thousands of EMA and SMA crossovers. None of them work for more than a few weeks. I use TradeStation, so I can automatically check, for example, every combination of moving average crossover between 2 and 100, or 100 and 1000, in a few minutes. Some crosses are better than others, but none of them are very profitable over the long term. In general, the more bars in the moving averages, the better it works. E.g., the 200 - 250 on daily bars is worth a look.

My advice is give up that idea and try something else. I've been experimenting over 15 years on technical automation methods. I have found a few systems that are profitable, but they all have Achilles heels. For example, I have a slightly modified 13-bar stochastic on daily bars of SPY that works, but it only takes 4-6 trade per year, and the annual profit is only about 10%.

  9. Agreed. Trading like surfing is a personal sport. Cool to chit chat with others, but when it comes down to trading decisions no time to get others support

  10. Would you tell the reason you didn't circle the other crossovers on your example you posted?
