Yes and No. If you buy one stock you expose yourself to market and stock risk, so that's the yes. If you buy roughly 20 stocks in diversified industries you've pretty much created your own mutual fund, which is the no. I don't invest in mutual funds at all. I buy a number of stocks and create my own mutual fund except I don't have to pay all those fees.
