For shorting 3X/-3X ETF with IB, how much money do I need to maintain in my account?

Discussion in 'Interactive Brokers' started by GloriaBrown, May 24, 2018.

  1. For example, I have 100,000 USD in my IB account, then how much money I can use to short a 3X/-3X ETF?

    Thanks.

Why not just buy the inverse ETF?

Did you run IB's margin simulator?
He's probably a noob who thinks shorting levered ETFs is free money.. It's a surprisingly widely-held misconception.

  4. Look at any long term performance of those etf then you know the answer.

  5. How to run that? Thanks.

  6. It is of course not free money but much easier to win then lose for most of the cases.

Enter your order in TWS, and check margin impact. As I recall, if you right-click on the order line, you will see the selection. Many short 3X ETFs do have some issues that are unusual, and you can't assume anything without checking the instrument.

  8. I haven't came to this forum for months

  10. Exactly, set up the order and before transmit it shows you the margin impact. I do it all the time to size positions.
