For remote traders, what's the minimum internet connection speed?

  1. Going remote (1st time), and looking for help from other remote traders.

What's the min d/l and u/l speed I should have?
Will be using lightspeed, 1 news feed and a simple rt screener.
May use excel DDE at some point, but not right away.
If it matters, I only use 2 screens on a XP based PC.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

  2. Ask your broker or software vendor/ data vendor. It's going to depend on lots of things including how many products you are charting, how many studies on each, etc. And latency can be more critical then bandwidth.

  3. Most anything close to FiOs will work - as long as you have more than 1megabit up you should be fine - the issue will be reliability vs. speed and latency.

Where are you and what is available?

  4. Probably 6-8 charts,
    < 3 indicators on each,
< 30 symbols on watch list,
    lightspeed for execution,
news feed and a RT scanner.

I don't have FIOS where I am, so I'm stuck with cable or SAT dish.
I'm leaning towards cable with the following service:
    Download Speed 15 Mbps
    Upload Speed 768 Kbps

I don't see a cable plan for up speed > 1Mbps in my area.

Thanks again and curious if the 15/768 is sufficient.

  5. Should be plenty.

  6. Thank you all for the help.

  7. I have a measured 3.3 Mbps DOWN, and a measured 258 kbps UP.

If I had the same requirements as oldschool, would this be enough?

  9. Why not Run a hosted desktop in a proper data center.
They have big pipe connections and are really inexpensive.
Than you can remote control with any client... iphone, pc, mac, browser with minimal bandwidth requirements.

  10. Probably.

Some years back, I traded on dialup with no adverse effects.... though I don't try to be a Habu sniper.
