I didn't study with him (he was an experimentalist) but know him well, we used to be, and still are, good friends. We have talked about Physics many times and practiced meditation together for a while. He tilts towards Buddism and I'm a strong Christian, but we share many common beliefs. One area where he and I agree is that we cannot talk about "objective reality" but only about "subjective reality" and "inter-subjective reality", meaning that we can talk about common experiences you and I have had. Those change wrt our state of "mind" meaning what we experience and what we can and cannot talk about (including logical and supra-logical experiences.) Stan would be the first one to agree with me on the following basic truths of all main religions: (1) we are immortal beings and (2) our embedded moral compass guides us to God. Where we might agree less is that for me God is a personal being (incarnated as Jesus Christ).
Logic is but a small tool among others, our intuitive feelings being the dominant ones" That may have been more true way back in the day...but today,we have much more knowledge and dont have to rely on what our intuition tells us.Back in the day all we had was intuition. We didnt have science, medecine etc to help us in our daily lives. I dont disbeleive in a higher power but jesus, mohammad and religions et al are a twisted, perverse interpretation of a higher power.

Please consider ALL of your life experiences, including love, trust, faith, enjoyment of music, desire, etc, and see that logic is a small part of it all.
As a means of obtaining truth, logic/reason is king, and without it love, faith, trust, and desire--all of which contain potential goodness--can become dangerous and destructive. Faith essentially is a decision, and decisions are best made not with feelings, but with reason, which is itself arguably a gift from God.
playing junior psychiatrist here: because as a person with some scientific training he knows there is no evidence for any god but since he has a want to believe in a god he had to devise a way to rationalize why there is no evidence in his mind. i would think it much easier to just accept what the evidence shows but some cant do it.
Faith is a tool of desire. Faith, unknown in the Kingdom of God, is invented to produce a world of illusion. Desire for illusions terminates inside a laberynth. Logic leads the way in, reason leads the way out. Reason allows truth to shine forth. Once truth is recognized, the reasonable will turn faith toward it by willing it. "Thy will be done in both heaven and earth", means that you are lost or found by your own willingness. Back at the Kingdom, who needs faith when everything is known with certainty? Reason serves well, but willingness is King, in reality and in illusions. This world is not the Son's will, so it is not your will either. It represents an alien will temporarily valued above true Will. The alien will seems to be king while this split conditions lasts. What it wills, neither the Son nor the Father will ever attack. Jesus
I'm not sure that you and I use the word "know" the same way, but my "spiritual knowledge" is derived from intuition, prayer, right action, meditation and guidance from others I trust, while my "scientific knowledge" comes from observation, experimentation and logic. My personal experience is that the latter is puny as compared to the former. I would not use my religious beliefs to repair a chair, and I would not use logic to understand why I feel happy when I sacrifice my comfort to help others.
